Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County and Inter-cal Real Estate are putting on a free Family Fun Carnival on Jan. 26 from 10am-3pm at the County Fair Shopping Center, at the corner of Fair Lane and Placerville Drive in Placerville.
There will be free food, games and a bike rodeo.

The Tahoe Backcountry Vertical Challenge continues this winter for the third year. Participants must register online to log human-powered, backcountry vertical travel. It’s all free.
When the cumulative goal of 15 million vertical feet of human-powered uphill travel is reached, Alpenglow Sports of Tahoe City will make a $3,000 donation to the Sierra Avalanche Center.
This is the opportunity for local backcountry enthusiasts to give back to the Sierra Avalanche Center at zero cost. Every single foot of uphill travel matters, and no number is too small.
The event runs through April 30.
A candlelight vigil to honor Alyssa Byrne will be Jan. 17 at 4:30pm.
The 19-year-old Petaluma woman died earlier this year after attending the SnowGlobe Music Festival.

With the onset of really cold weather, frozen water pipes are inevitable. Unfortunately, along with this problem, the fire department responds to an increase of structure fires caused by residents trying to quick-fix the problem themselves.
Instead of using space heaters, torches, or other hot flame devices to thaw pipes, call a professional plumber to get the water flowing again. In the long run, it’s much cheaper and effective than burning the house down around those frozen pipes.

Three people have submitted applications for the vacant South Lake Tahoe City Council seat.
The three are Kathay Lovell — who stepped down from the council in 2010 after serving two terms; Austin Sass — who has run twice and not been elected, the last time being in November; and Scott Valentine — a newcomer to the scene, who is a geology professor at Lake Tahoe Community College.
The seat is open because Claire Fortier quit in December halfway through her four-year term.
People have until 5pm Jan. 25 to turn in the forms. Forms are available from the city clerk. Interviews will be before the council in open session on Jan. 29 at 9am. The person is expected to be sworn in that day assuming consensus is reached by the council. If no one is chosen, an election would be conducted in June.

Tahoe Regional Young Professionals will ring in 2013 with a sampling of German-style food and beverages at Himmel Haus for TRYP’s Jan. 22 mixer from 7–10pm.
The evening will also include live acoustic music and networking opportunities.
Admission is free for TRYP members and $5 for non-members. Annual TRYP memberships cost $40.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a subcontract with El Dorado County for the Primary Intervention Program at Tahoe Valley, Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet and Sierra House elementary schools.
The goal of the program is to help kindergarten through third-grade students with mild aggression, withdrawal, learning difficulties, or who may be at-risk for developing emotional problems to enhance their social and emotional development.
The PIP program is funded through the California Mental Health Services Act and supports 12 to 15 weeks each semester for individualized, non-directive play therapy sessions with the PIP worker and the child.
The closure of Fair Lane in Placerville has been extended due to weather delays.
The road is not set to reopen Feb. 4.
Access to businesses along Fair Lane will remain open via Placerville Drive. Access to the County Government Center will be via Forni Road or Ray Lawyer Drive.

There will be public memorial service for Alyssa Byrne on Jan. 12 at 10am in the gymnasium at Casa Grande High in Petaluma.
People are asked to wear pink — Byrne’s favorite color.
Byrne, 19, died last week near South Lake Tahoe after attending the SnowGlobe Music Festival.
