Tahoe Expedition Academy’s inaugural Great Truckee Pumpkin Race is Oct. 27 from 4-5:30pm in downtown Truckee at the junction of High and Jibboom streets.

This outdoor event involves competing pumpkin race “cars.” This is a child, teen, parent, and grandparent event where you build a pumpkin car (according to the rules), decorate it, and let it go down an inclined race course. 

There will be cheater pumpkins. They will be smashed by the referee’s giant mallet.

Winners of each heat advance to the quarterfinals and championship. A grand prize of $500 will be awarded to the winning pumpkin along with trophies for the top three races, the most outrageous pumpkin and the pumpkin with the best costume. A corporate division will also be available for local businesses to compete against each other. 

Race entry will cost $15 in advance and $20 that day. Register online.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services’ 2nd annual Night of Magic at The Loft in Heavenly Village will be Nov. 8 at 7pm.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services has expanded to serve Alpine and Douglas counties. The nonprofit’s mission is: “To promote the healthy development of children, families, and individuals through counseling, mentoring, and support programs.” 

Two of the five people who applied to be on the South Lake Tahoe Roads Management Authority Commission were appointed Tuesday — MaryAnne Brand and Brent Goligoski.

They are the two who attended the Oct. 17 council meeting.

The council is hoping more people will apply, though the remaining three will remain in the pool. The commission will have five to seven members.

The  commission will take effect if Measure C, the roads sales tax, is approved Nov. 7.

Annually the commission would be tasked with approving the expenditure plan for the road construction, maintenance and road repair.

Participants must be a resident of the city and be eligible to vote.

South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance are partnering for the second art gallery reception on Oct. 23 from 6-8pm at City Hall.

The Tahoe Arts Alliance connects artists, businesses and organizations on the South Shore. The city’s lobby at the airport serves as a blank canvas to display local artists. The art will be rotated throughout the year. All art will be available for purchase.

The City Art Gallery reception will include a meet and greet with displaying artists and city officials.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care is having a fundraiser on Oct. 19 at the Lake House restaurant in South Lake Tahoe.

The animal rehab facility, which has been in operation for nearly 40 years, is on a campaign to raise money to sustain operational costs. Those expenses are expected to increase substantially when the new center opens on Al Tahoe Boulevard.

Money raised this week will go directly to operations to give native animals and birds a second chance.

·      Beth Hart, a two-time Grammy-nominated artist, will be performing Feb. 10 at 8pm at MontBleu in Stateline.

·      Tahoe Adventure Film Festival brings together some of the industry’s best filmmakers to premier their latest adventure sports films. It will be Dec. 9 at 6:30pm at MontBleu in Stateline. Tickets start at $22.

·      Lake Tahoe Unified School District’s board this month voted to use 100 percent renewable electricity by 2032, the same goal the city approved earlier this year. The resolution also calls for supporting green building practices, greater biking, walking and transit options for students, school lunches with more locally sourced and organic foods, additional school gardens and landscaping practices that minimize water and chemical use.

Truckee Police Department and the TT-FWDD (Tahoe Truckee Future Without Drug Dependence) on Oct. 28 from 9am-1pm will give the public an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Bring your medications for disposal to the Gateway Shopping Center parking lot in front of Safeway at 11290 Donner Pass Road. Remove pills from their containers or black out any personal information. Sharps, aerosols, and illicit drugs are not accepted.

This event is for residents only; no businesses or DEA registrants.

During the last two events in 2016, Truckee police collected 441.5 pounds of unused, expired, or unwanted drugs. Nationally more than 702,365 pounds were collected at more than 5,000 collection sites across the United States.

South Lake Tahoe is accepting applications for the South Tahoe Action Team.

STAT will be on four consecutive Wednesdays at 5:30pm beginning Oct. 18.

This program is designed to incorporate trained citizens in the field with South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and other first responders during times of crisis.

Classes will be taught at the SLTFR Training Facility and run approximately two hours per class through Nov. 8.
