The League to Save Lake Tahoe will be giving a presentation on the evenings of March 13 and 14 about Pipe Keepers, a new volunteer monitoring program.

Pipe Keepers is a volunteer-based monitoring program that examines turbidity (clarity) of water that enters Lake Tahoe and its tributaries through storm drains. The group was created last fall in response to concerns about a neighborhood storm pipe discharging dirty looking water directly into Lake Tahoe. Since the program launched, nine volunteers have collected more than 200 samples from neighborhood storm pipes. The program will expand this spring to include additional volunteers and pipes.

The presentation and discussion will focus on storm drain pipes in Tahoe, information learned during this pilot season, and opportunities to become involved.

The March 13 presentation will be at Lake Tahoe Community College board room at 6pm and the March 14 presentation will be at Incline Village General Improvement District Public Works meeting room at 6pm.

When you see an emergency vehicle either coming from behind or toward you with its red lights and siren sounding, please give the right-of-way to that ambulance, fire truck, or police car by pulling over to the right side of the road and stopping.

Even if you are in the center turn lane, it’s the law that you yield to the right side of the street without blocking the intersection.

Once the vehicles have passed, it is then safe to resume your normal travel path.

The Sugar Pine Foundation is putting on a wine tasting and fundraising at Ben’s Fine Wines & Spirits in south Reno on March 8 from 5-10pm.

The event will feature wine from five El Dorado County vineyards: Madrona, Fenton Herriott, Boeger, Lava Cap and Holly’s Hill.

There will also be hors d’oeuvres, a photography expose about the Sugar Pine Foundation, and a wine-centric live auction and raffle.

The cost is $15.

• The March 5 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting has been canceled. The next meeting is March 19 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.

• South Tahoe Public Utility District’s board is having a workshop March 6 from 2-5pm to discuss the budget and 10-year capital improvement plan. The meeting is at 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe is hosting a public workshop on the Tourist Core Area Plan formerly known as the Stateline/Ski Run Community Plan on March 20 from 6-9pm at Lake Tahoe Airport.

City planning staff will be on hand to present information on the updated plan and to gather public input.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency staff will also be present to discuss the recent adoption of the Regional Plan and its relationship to the Tourist Core Area Plan.

Douglas County is having a workshop March 1 about the area plan for Stateline.

Area plans are required in the Lake Tahoe Basin per the recently adopted Regional Plan of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Three new ambulances are stationed on the South Shore.

There were recently purchased by California Tahoe Emergency Service Operations Authority.

They replaced our three older units that will be used as reserves.

The ambulances are equipped with power load gurneys. The power load system increases the safety for patients and significantly decreases the possibility of back injuries to firefighters. The gurneys are capable of hydraulically lifting any size patient into the ambulance.

Three Zoll “Autopulse” cardiac support units were also purchased. These are automatic CPR machines, which deliver improved blood flow without interruptions during transport. It also eliminates the fatigue factor by EMS personnel and provides hospital caregivers better access to the patient.

CTESOA is the organization overseen by Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe Fire Department which manages the ambulance service. Ambulances are housed at fires stations throughout the area to decrease response times during medical emergencies.
