Douglas County sheriff’s deputies will be stepping up traffic enforcement at intersections and crosswalks to look for red light and stop sign violations, pedestrian violations, speeders and distracted drivers throughout the county from March 11-19.

Key factors in many of the recent fatal highway traffic accidents have been driver inattention and failure to yield to pedestrians, according to deputies.

DCSO deputies will continue to enforce all traffic violations on all roadways throughout the county; these violations in particular will be targeted and enforced. Citations will be issued to violators.

This enforcement detail is partially paid for by a grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

Daylight-saving times begins March 10 at 2am.

• Lake Tahoe Golf Course has retained its designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. This group is not affiliated with the Audubon Society.

• Space Science for Schools program Club Cosmos will offer free astronomical-grade telescope and binocular viewing at Sand Harbor Nevada State Park at the Boat Ramp Parking area on March 13, 6:30-7:30pm.

• The Friends of Squaw Creek are putting on a free forum about the biology of Squaw Creek on March 28 at 6pm at the Squaw Valley Public Services District meeting room, 305 Squaw Valley Road.

Lake of the Sky Garden Club in Incline Village is looking to give away money for community-related garden projects in the North Lake Tahoe area.

The club’s goals are to promote an interest in gardening, with particular emphasis on the problems at high altitude, to support charitable, educational, and scientific works, as well as to initiate and participate in beautification and developmental gardening projects in the North Lake Tahoe region.

Money for grants comes from the club’s annual garden tour. This year is the 25th annual event. It is July 27 from 10am-4pm. Tickets for this year’s garden tour will be available at Truckee-Tahoe nurseries after June 15.

Professor Tom Meyer, who has climbed the pyramids in Egypt, explored Petra, walked around the Sea of Galilee and explored the entire Holy Land, will be giving a talk March 10 at at 11am at First Baptist Church (1053 Wildwood Ave., South Lake Tahoe).

Meyer has written about the culture and religion of the Middle East. He will speak from the book of Genesis on Hebrew thought and practice with an emphasis on the culture, mannerisms, and geography of the Holy Land. Educated in Jerusalem, Meyer will deliver comments on his recent four-year stint in the Middle East.

“Old Long Skis” is a contributor we see often here on Lake Tahoe News. OLS (aka Bob Rockwell) has lived here since 1962 and he’s sharing with me historic photos of some local businesses.

One of those was the Tahoe Drive In Theatre where he worked. It closed in 1984.

I’ve added related photos, mostly depicting the original movie marquee atop the frame which still stands today at Herbert and Highway 50.

It was OLS’s job to climb a ladder and straddle the adjoining roof to post the red plastic letters on that marquee each time the movies changed. He also trained to be the projectionist.

The marquee is visible above the red convertible in this frame from Winter-A-Go-Go which was filmed at South Shore in 1965. I saw that movie at the Tahoe Drive In. Ah, those days when a night at the movies meant two full features, cartoon, and newsreel.

The footprint of the drive in theater is still evident today in the 1350 block of Glenwood Way in Bijou as seen in this Google aerial photo.

If I remember correctly, the city of South Lake Tahoe at one time intended to make it a snow-play park.
