El Dorado County residents can keep their homes cooler this summer and warmer next winter by taking advantage of free weatherization services through the El Dorado County Community Services Weatherization Program.

The average household saves $400 each year on their energy bills after weatherization.

Qualified low-income property owners and renters can receive an average of $3,055 in home improvements through the program. Weatherization technicians check the home to see where improvements can be made; services are customized for each home and designed for maximum cost savings.

The Weatherization Program also has an emergency fund to help eligible households with emergency repair, replacement and installation of heating/cooling appliances and water heating appliances.

The Weatherization Program is available countywide. Households must meet eligibility guidelines and income requirements.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit extended the deadline for proposals to reconstruct, operate and maintain Round Hill Pines Resort. Applications must be received by June 21 at 4:30pm.

This business opportunity includes a popular day-use area and beach, as well as the potential for redevelopment of current facilities. Bidders can also propose to expand services, including offering short-term public overnight accommodations and winter recreation activities. The Forest Service is seeking a bidder who can provide high quality public service in operating and maintaining government-owned recreation facilities.

Project Safe Place is a communitywide effort to provide youth in the South Lake Tahoe area with safe haven and crisis intervention services.

The Douglas County Public Library, Lake Tahoe branch presents Saturday Stories and Crafts on March 23 at 1pm.

Miss Carol will read Easter stories and provide a craft. This is for ages 3-12. Young children should be accompanied by an adult.

The Tahoe-Douglas Rotary St. Patrick’s Day Celebration is March 15 from 6-10pm at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

The annual event features a traditional Irish buffet, wine tasting, and one of the region’s biggest silent actions to help raise more than $30,000 each year for charitable organizations through grants, projects and donations, mostly supporting the South Shore community.

Because of safety concerns, the new westbound carpool lane on Highway 50 from Cameron Park Drive to Bass Lake Road in El Dorado County remains closed.

A drainage issue was discovered on one section of the new lane. The fix will require repaving, and temperatures are not expected to be warm enough to repave until sometime in May.

An updated advisory by Caltrans will be released when the lane is open to traffic.

Nel’s, circa 1964

Nel’s has been around for decades, just not where it is today.

“Nels” Nelson relocated his hardware, appliance and supply store a couple of times, including occupying what had been the dining room in Connolly’s two-story beachfront lodge across Highway 50. (It was replaced by Timbercove Lodge in 1973.)

I believe Nel’s moved into what is now the Fremont Mall (where Freshies is) after Safeway vacated. (Safeway’s present building is the third time Safeway has built a new store here.)

Finally, Nel’s settled at its current Fremont Avenue address near Tahoe Bowl after the South Lake Tahoe Police Department moved over to its present Johnson Boulevard facilities.

This is an opportunity for those who have served to reconnect with fellow vets from past and present conflicts. The event is designed to provide an opportunity to reconnect with first responders and rehabilitation personnel from your past in a healthy and supportive place far from the battlefield.

The March meditation put on by Rosemary Manning will be a heart-centered meditation. In addition to calming oneself with meditation, people will learn how to stop energetic leaking of heart energy from the fourth chakra and learn how to create the highest receptivity to positive energy into ones hearts.
