• In accordance with the municipal NPDES Storm Water Permit for Runoff Discharges in the Lake Tahoe Hydrologic Unit, South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County,and Placer County have submitted Pollutant Load Reduction Plans describing how their respective municipalities will reduce fine sediment particle and nutrient loading to Lake Tahoe to meet established requirements. The submitted plans include measures taken since the Lake Tahoe TMDL baseline was established in 2004 and extend until the end of the existing permit term in 2015. The plans are available for review on the Lahontan Water Board website.

David Kelly

There’s a new mayor in South Lake Tahoe starting today.

David Kelly on Tuesday was made the city’s honorary mayor for one week starting April 3.

In issuing the proclamation, Mayor Tom Davis spoke of Kelly’s dedication of time and energy to the community, most notable for seniors and those with disabilities.

While he wasn’t given a gavel or invited to sit with the rest of the council, Kelly said he was honored by the gesture.

• Caesars Entertainment, parent company of Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harveys, has received a 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index six years in a row.

• A slew of meetings in April are designed to figure out the future of Truckee Tahoe Airport. More info is online.

• Old Brockway Golf Course in Kings Beach broke a record from 1995 when it opened March 16. The earliest opening date had been March 24.

• Ryan Sheltra is now vice chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism.

• Bijou Golf Course is open. The April 1 opening is the earliest opening date in the South Lake Tahoe links’ history.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department is hosting a Badge Pinning Ceremony on April 4 at 4pm in the City Council chambers located at 1901 Airport Road.

The following fire fighters will be recognized:

• Kenin Fairley on his promotion to shift commander
• Doug Bailey on his promotion to fire engineer
• Dylan Fuchs on being hired as a firefighter-paramedic
• Mike Taormina on being hired as a firefighter-paramedic.

This ceremony is open to the public.

There will be a free Medication Take Back Day on April 27 in Truckee and Tahoe City.

• Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Executive Director Joanne Marchetta was named Public Servant of the Year at the 59th annual Community Awards dinner hosted by the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association and Chamber of Commerce.

• Larry Ellison, the billionaire chief of Oracle, has his 2.62-acre Glenbrook compound on the market for $28.5 million. His second Tahoe estate in Incline Village is almost ready to move into.

• The Douglas County Planning Commission on April 9 (not before 1pm) will discuss the South Shore Area Plan and related documents. A vote is expected. The meeting is in Minden.

• The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted March 26 to proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention Month throughout the county.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Inks brothers of Sacramento had grocery stores at various times in Bijou (now CVS), Al Tahoe (now market and Video Library), and Tahoe Valley (now Factory Stores at the Y).

The 1966 photo (courtesy Bob Rockwell) shows Inks at the Y with the distant Lampson’s Trading Center sign above the Cornet 5-10 store. Just beyond the Cornet store (but not visible here) was a popular watering hole called Tahoe Tropics, on roughly today’s Subway site.

A much earlier Lampson’s Trading Center also included a market, bank, real estate office, U.S. Post Office, and a two-pump 76 gas station.

The 1973 photo (mine) shows the razing of the complex which was replaced by the Lampson Plaza with a sparkling new (but short-lived) Lampson’s Market.

That space became a sizable Thrifty Drug Store, but it closed, too.

Approximately 1980, with the sudden popularity of “outlet stores,” Lampson Plaza became rebranded as today’s Factory Stores at the Y.

The color photo (mine) today is about where the 1966 Inks’ market was, while the newer-built 1970s Lampson’s Market and then Thrifty Drug Store each were located in the wing most-recently vacated by Adidas and about to become Big 5 Sporting Goods.

There will be a Neighborhood Service Team meeting on April 25 from 5:30-7pm for Area No. 4, which includes Al Tahoe, Bijou Pines and Pioneer Village.

South Lake Tahoe has funding to support neighborhood improvement initiatives such as neighborhood signage and other things which exemplify neighborhood pride.

The meeting is at the senior center.
