·      On Nov. 18 at 10am there will be a book sale at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Rufus Allen Boulevard. Friends of the Library members are allowed in at 9am.

·      Heavenly Mountain and Northstar ski resorts plan to start making snow Nov. 1 prior to opening day Nov. 17. Kirkwood plans on opening Nov. 22.

·       South Lake Tahoe is having a meeting Nov. 2 at 5:30pm at the rec center to go over the Sierra Boulevard project design.

·       There will be a flu shot clinic on Oct. 25 from 3-6pm at Bijou Community School in South Lake Tahoe. Cost is $10, though will be denied for inability to pay.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is offering a workshop for people to learn how to manage and customize a website using WordPress.

The class will be Nov. 15 from noon-1:30pm at the chamber office in Stateline.

During this workshop attendees will be taught:

• What happens during the WordPress installation process
• How to manage a WordPress site
• Best practices for content management
• How to customize the site.

This workshop is for WordPress beginners.

Cost is $10.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department and California Alcoholic Beverage Control are partnering to provide training for licensed businesses and their employees on the laws involving the sale and service of alcoholic beverages.

Training is designed to help businesses better understand their responsibilities and also provide them with the tools and knowledge they need to promote reasonable consumption and contribute to making communities safer.

The training is free and the curriculum is designed for licensees, managers and employees.

·       Placer County’s draft update to its winery and farm brewery ordinance is available for public review and comment online.

·       South Lake Tahoe is conducting a survey to gauge if polystyrene should be banned in the city.

·      Douglas County libraries in Minden and Zephyr Cove will be closed Oct. 27-28 for the Nevada Day weekend. 

·      Sierra-at-Tahoe has hired Duane Stutzman to be director of snowsports school and Maria Aime as manager of Wild Mountain children’s program.

·      North Tahoe Public Utility District is offering rebates on water-saving appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines as well as “smart” irrigation controllers, toilets, faucets, and more.  

·       The nonprofit Tahoe Figure Skating is sponsoring a Halloween event. There will be $5 skating in costumes (skate rentals included), and an exhibition by local skaters on Oct. 28 form 2:15-6:15pm at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

·      Dave Brady has announced his candidacy for sheriff of Douglas County.

·       NAMI El Dorado County is hosting an information gathering hour specifically to provide perspective to the county about areas of opportunity to improve services and support. It will be Nov. 2 from 1:30-2:30pm in the Aspen Room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

·      Integrity Locksmith in South Lake Tahoe is accepting donations for Wine Country victims. Items can be dropped off at 2331 Lake Tahoe Blvd. from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Fridaay

·       Placer County Board of Supervisors will meet Oct. 23 in Tahoe. They will hear an update on the county’s efforts to ensure short-term lodging providers are collecting their fair share of guest lodging tax, and consider a policy on the investment of those funds and approval of several local projects that would be funded with revenue from them.

Passport to Dining, North Tahoe’s flavorful fundraiser features up to 35 food, wine, beer, and other beverage tasting stations as well as a silent auction and raffle chock-full of valuable items.

The event will take place Nov. 9, 6-9pm at a new venue, Tahoe Biltmore. It is a fundraiser for North Tahoe Business Association.

This year, a portion of Passport to Dining’s proceeds will be donated to Project MANA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the incidence of hunger and its detrimental effects upon individuals, families, the community, and region.

Tickets are $40 in advance or $50 day of event.

The unveiling of the Spirit of Competition bronze sculpture at Champions Plaza in South Lake Tahoe will take place Oct. 27 at noon.

On the heels of the 2014 Winter Olympics, in which several  local athletes earned Olympic medals, the idea of creating a Champions Plaza was born. To honor and recognize these athletes the City Council approved the construction and design of a Champions Plaza at Lakeview Commons.

The approximate 11-foot bronze sculpture which represents male and female athletes reaching for a ring is being created by Gareth Curtiss.

In the spring the athletes will be inducted.

Don’t let cool temperatures fool you, the Tahoe-Truckee area is in a high fire danger on Thursday with the winds that are preceding the storm front.

A fire that starts today could quickly get out of control, warn fire officials. They are saying to avoid activities that could spark a fire. This includes open burning, campfires, chain saws, and weed eating.

Prepare for an evacuation. Think about what you will take with you, have it ready, set a meeting location for your family. Park cars facing out, have garden hoses spread out and ready to knock down embers.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from Thursday night through noon Oct. 20 for the higher elevations of the Sierra mountains.

Snow accumulations may occur on Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and on Highway 50 over Echo Summit, with chain controls possible after midnight Thursday. Gusty winds may also reduce visibility.

Caltrans is reminding motorists that wet and slippery roadways reduce tire traction, especially at high vehicle speeds. Hydroplaning can result in loss of driver control.
