Today is a great time to develop a home fire escape plan. Teach it to and practice it with your family on a regular basis.

Check your smoke detector and replace the battery at least once a year.

And finally, remember, if there is a fire, teach everyone to get out and stay out, It’s your best fire- safe response.

As Lake Tahoe Community College gears up to celebrate its 40th birthday it is taking the time to focus on what the college is and what it can become over the next 40 years.

The community is invited to a visions session to help define the college’s future, and by extension, the region’s future.

• BASSmaster magazine has ranked Clear Lake as the third best bass lake in the country. Other Northern California waters on the list are: Delta No. 9, Lake Oroville No. 24, Lake Shasta No. 33, Bullards Bar No. 37, and Lake Berryessa No. 53. The top spot is Lake St. Clair in Michigan.

• At the April National Rural Water Association conference in Stateline there was a blind tasting with Incline Village General Improvement District awarded the Best Tasting Water in Nevada. IVGID’s water comes from Lake Tahoe.

Sno-Flake Drive-In — a Highway 50 landmark in the Al Tahoe area. A burger joint first started there in the 1950s.

And at one time, it was purple.

Caltrans on May 6 will begin work on Highway 50 from Ski Run Boulevard to Wildwood Avenue.

Construction through June 30 will occur primarily from 6am-6pm Monday through Thursday and Friday from 4am-noon.

Beginning July 1, night work is expected from 8pm-11am Monday through Friday.

Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are asked to be patient and allow some extra time to get through the work zone.

AT&T wants to install overhead fiber optic lines on existing poles near Diamond Peak Ski Resort in Incline Village.

The idea is that people would have better cell phone and Internet service.

The U.S. Forest Service, as landowners, will decide if the project goes forward.

No land has to be disturbed in the 10,740-square-foot area where the 1,074-feet of line would go.

Public comment is being taken through May.

• The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association has named Squaw Valley Ski Team the 2013 USSA Alpine Ski Club of the Year.

Community Wildfire Protection Plans and Fire-Adapted Communities are the focus of webinars on May 7 and May 14 put on by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

The first one-hour, free webinar will be offered at 10am May 7 in conjunction with Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week that begins May 4. Participants will learn about the purpose and value of Community Wildfire Protection Plans and explore a digital template designed specifically for communities located in Washoe County. The template can easily be modified for use outside of Washoe County.

The next one-hour, free webinar will be offered at 10am May 14. Participants will learn about Fire-Adapted Communities, communities that can survive wildfires with little or no assistance from firefighters. This is possible because of how the homes are built and maintained, how vegetation is managed and the knowledge of residents.

• Lake Tahoe’s West Shore Café and Inn has hired Mike Davis as executive chef and Stacie Krenicki as the property’s general manager. Both were most recently at Martis Camp.

• The U.S. Forest Service will talk May 4 at 4pm about the acquisition of the Hole in the Ground, Lola Montez and Castle Peak acreage. The meeting will be at the Caltrans cafeteria in Kingvale.

• Caltrans is meeting to discuss rehabilitating or replacing the South Fork American River Bridge on Highway 49 in El Dorado County. The meeting is May 14, 6-8pm, Gold Trail Grange No. 452, 319 Highway 49, Coloma.

• MontBleu’s summer outdoor concert series will kick off with the second annual Lake Tahoe Reggae Festival on June 29. The 5,200-seat outdoor amphitheater in Stateline will feature breezy Jamaican rhythms and reggae ska beats from headliners SOJA and Alpha Blondy, along with special guests Passafire, Stickfigure, Tomorrows Bad Seed and Island of Black & White.
