SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, and the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce will offer a free seminar May 18 for people interested in starting a business.

Business Start Up Basics, covering personal goals and evaluating the idea, legal issues, marketing, financial planning, funding and more, will be from 9-11:30am at the Chamber of Commerce in the Carson Valley Museum at 1477 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.

Presenters will be SCORE counselors Jack Van Dien and Tom Jablonski.

The seminar is geared at those entrepreneurs who may be looking at a franchise opportunity or starting an independent business.

Desolation Wilderness will be the topic Bill Finch’s talk next month.

The volunteer backcountry wilderness ranger for the U.S. Forest Service will show slides which he believes best exemplify the natural beauty found close to South Lake Tahoe.

The free talk is June 15 at 1:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe branch library.

Daniel T. Robertson, a surgeon with Tahoe Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, will give a lecture on the causes of hand and arm pain on May 22 from 6-7pm.

The talk will be at Sierra Nevada College, Room 139, Incline Village.

Volunteers are key to the success of Camp Sunrise, a free bereavement camp for children, and are needed for the June 14-16.

Held at Galilee Camp & Conference Center in Glenbrook, Camp Sunrise is founded on the understanding that every child deserves the opportunity to grieve in a safe, supportive and understanding environment. This free camp is funded by Barton Foundation and is a program of Barton Hospice. Designed for children ages 7 through 14, the camp is geared toward children who have experienced the death of a loved one.

The children receive grief education and support from trained counselors and social workers who help them work through bereavement issues. The weekend is designed to leave them with a more positive outlook on their future.

The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association is looking for someone to design a logo for October’s K-9 trials.

The deadline is June 30.

The winning logo design will be printed on the backs of T-shirts, sweat shirts, trophies and other K9 Trial paraphernalia.

The winning designer will receive $100 and a sweat shirt and T-shirt with their logo. The winner will also be invited to attend the K9 Trial banquet on Oct. 5.

For as little as $500 (does not include annual membership of $100), a child can go to the Boys & Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe for the entire summer.

Everyone of every age is invited to the Spring Fling Dance on May 31 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center.

Music will be provided by the 17-piece Tahoe Dance Band from 7:30-10pm.

It is not necessary to come with a partner. Wearing dressy clothing is optional.

Admission includes appetizers, desserts, wine, other beverages and a free door prize ticket – all for $10. Those 20 and under are not served wine, but only pay $5. The center is at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
