Paramedics, emergency medical technicians, firefighters and base hospital medical staff in El Dorado County are being recognized as part of National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 19-25.

More than 14,500 calls for emergency medical assistance are received through the 911 system in El Dorado County each year. The local EMS system includes the 911 system, dispatch centers, first responders, paramedic ambulances, air ambulances, acute care hospitals, trauma centers and medical oversight by the local EMS Agency.

The El Dorado County EMS Agency partners with Marshall Medical Center and Barton Memorial Hospital, certifies and trains paramedics and EMTs in El Dorado County, and develops policies and procedures for emergency medical response in the field.

The corner drive-up payment window has survived since the 1960s on Fremont Avenue at Sandy Way in the Bijou area of South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Collaborative is a community strengthening group that collaborates with families and service providers about the services available in South Lake Tahoe.

The annual June 10 retreat is open to the public to join the dialogue to help set goals and intentions for this year.

Lunch will be provided.

The retreat is from noon-1:45pm at Lake Tahoe Community College’s board room.

El Dorado County will close both directions of Bass Lake Road between Silver Dove Way and City Lights Drive on May 31 at 6pm until June 3 at 6am.

Closure times may change depending on weather and progress of the planned work.

The closure to replace a culvert on Bass Lake Road.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured to Serrano Parkway and El Dorado Hills Boulevard to provide access to and from Highway 50.

Causes and Treatment of Hip Pain is the topic of Robert Rupp’s June 5 lecture.

The Barton doctor will discuss hip tendinitis, bursitis and arthritis, along with sciatic nerve compression and treatment options such as hip arthroscopy and anterior hip replacement.

The free talk is from 6-7pm at Kahle Community Center, 236 Kingsbury Grade, Stateline.

Rep. Tom McClintock’s office will join with representatives from Nevada and Placer counties to conduct a Veterans Resource Day in Truckee on May 22 from 11am to 2pm.

The event will be at the Truckee Town Hall, 2nd floor, Eastwing Conference Room, 10183 Truckee Airport Road, Truckee.

The event will provide veterans with the information they need to access benefits from the Veterans Affairs Administration. Representatives from the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will also be on hand to assist active-duty military, wounded warriors and military families.

• At the May 16 South Tahoe PUD meeting the board agreed to extend the agreement with Lukins Brothers Water through Aug. 1. This is to give the T.J. Maxx center water in case of an emergency.

The Sugar Pine Foundation is having a fundraiser at the Eagle’s Nest at the top of Kingsbury Grade on May 31.

For $10, have all-you-can-eat homemade chili, salad and bread. The bar will donate 50 percent of drink proceeds to the foundation.

Music and a live auction will be part of the festivities. The event is from 6-9pm.

The Eagle’s Nest is located at 472 Needle Peak Road, Stateline, above Heavenly’s Stagecoach Lodge.

The annual Nevada Click it or Ticket seat belt awareness and enforcement campaign is planned for May 18 through June 2.

During this two-week time frame, state troopers, sheriff’s deputies, and police officers from around the Silver State will be joining forces and placing a high priority on this vitally important traffic law.

Last year in Nevada there were 234 fatality crashes resulting in a total of 257 traffic-related deaths. The Nevada Highway Patrol investigated 92 of those tragic events where a total of 113 motorists were killed. Thirty-nine of those highway deaths involved drivers and passengers who were not wearing a seat belt.

South Lake Tahoe has been awarded a competitive grant from the State Water Resources Control Board through the Proposition 84 Stormwater Grant Program.

The city was one of 37 applicants to make it through the first round of the application process, and one of 24 selected for funding.

South Tahoe was awarded the maximum grant amount available of $3 million, which will be used for construction of the Bijou Area Erosion Control Project. The project will take two years starting this summer.

A total of $42 million was given out by state for projects designed to reduce and prevent stormwater contamination of rivers, lakes, and streams.
