Truckee’s 6th annual Electronic Waste Recycling event is June 22 from 9am-2pm in the back parking lot of Town Hall, 10183 Truckee Airport Road.

Residents are encouraged to drop off all their old electronic equipment for free recycling. Computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers, cell phones, radios, telephones and fax machines are common electronic products that must be kept out of household trash and recycled separately.

Electronics waste may be recycled at the Eastern Regional Landfill free of charge throughout the year. For details, call Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal at (530) 583.0148.

The Truckee Police Department will once again offer residents the opportunity to shred confidential paperwork onsite at the community recycle event.

Last year 9,000 pounds of paper was accepted through this event. Get there early, space is limited. The paper shred portion of this event is from 9-11am.

Live Violence Free with support from Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Sierra is putting on Girls’ Empowerment Day on June 8.

The event is from 9am-5pm at Inn by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe.

All middle school girls, including those that are either going into high school or will be starting middle school next school, are invited.

Workshops will be centered on achieving a sense of self-esteem, leadership and empowerment. Workshops will be conducted by Soul 2 Soul, TRiO, and Live Violence Free, with yoga from Audrey Villanueva. The workshops will include arts and crafts, self-defense, yoga, and a girls support group.

There is no cost to participate.

Tahoe Truckee Sierra Disposal is proposing to raise rates by 1 percent starting July 1.

There will be a public hearing on the topic on June 11 at 9am in the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting room in Placerville.

Currently residents pay $24.69 for one 32-gallon gallon or $32.61 for two cans per month. The rate increase would have those fees to go $24.94 and $32.94, respectively.

As the sun rises over the lake early June 24, cars will be getting their last-minute cleanup and makeup as they prepare to show the community of South Lake Tahoe that the British have once again arrived.

More than 125 Austin Healeys from California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Canada and farther away will be on display in the center of Heavenly Village from 10am-2pm.

Various models from 1953 to 1968 will be represented.

Applications are being accepted for El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office S.T.A.R. Academy in the fall.

The Sept. 16-27 academy is weekdays from 8am-noon, with accompanying afternoon driver proficiency training and law enforcement support visitations.

S.T.A.R. patrols the highways and byways of El Dorado County in specially marked vehicles. They check on homes while the owners are on vacation, as well as oversee the Neighborhood Watch program and YANA (You Are Not Alone) program. S.T.A.R.s are also involved with community events, assisting with parking or traffic control as well as monitoring the area and providing a Sheriff’s Office presence.

To qualify for the S.T.A.R. program, applicants must be 50 or older, have a good driving record, no criminal history, a physical clearance from a doctor, and pass an oral interview.

South Tahoe High School’s annual Pops Concerts are June 3 and June 5 from 7-8:30pm in the Tahoe Arts and Design Academy.

Under the direction of Casson Scowcroft, the orchestra, band and jazz band will perform Monday featuring “Music through the Ages”. On Wednesday, the chorus, advanced chorus and glee club under the direction of Bob Grant will present “It Ain’t Easy Being Green”.

All proceeds will benefit STHS/TADA to provide opportunities for students beyond traditional curricular offerings such as guest conductors, special events, commissioning musical pieces, and more.

Renowned limnologist Charles Goldman will be talking about climate change and global warming effects on lakes of the world on June 7.

UC Davis research at Lake Tahoe began with Goldman. In 1959, Goldman formed the Tahoe Research Group and began regularly monitoring Lake Tahoe.

Goldman retired from UC Davis where he had been a professor since 1958. He developed the first courses in limnology (the study of fresh waters) and oceanography at UC Davis.

At 5:30pm the no-host bar opens, with the presentation at 6pm at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village (on the campus of Sierra Nevada College).
