“Kelmont East” was a grey tri-level apartment complex in 1963 on Kahle Drive at Stateline between Highway 50 and the lake.

Over the years, the Kahle Drive intersection at Highway 50 (behind camera) included the Stateline Medical Center, a small casino, and a local favorite watering hole and dancing spot called The Glass Crutch. Across the state line, there was a Kelmont West (or “Kelmont Arms”) apartments on Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe, which was the scene of a shooting and multi-hours police stand-off in the 1970s.

Kahle Drive today on the left side of this photo has several side-streets and is mostly residential, cornering the Lakeside Inn and bordering the 4-H Club complex. On the right side is U.S. Forest Service land including the popular Lam Watah Trail crossing Rabe Meadow and taking you to Nevada Beach. Rabe Meadow once was the site of an airport, and in the 1970s very nearly became another huge casino/hotel.

Even some concrete foundations (not quite as extensive as today’s “hole”) had progressed.

An easy walk along the trail today (new parking lot near the stoplight) includes several pictorial reader boards which detail the history of the meadow, its Washoe heritage, the airport, the casino, and how it was rescued.

Kahle (pronounced “kail”) was land-owner Oliver Kahle. The Douglas County services building (courtroom, jail, DMV, etc/) and Kahle Community Center and Park of today occupy the area of his historic Oliver’s Club Casino which was razed in the 1960s.

• The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority board at the June 13 3pm meeting will vote on whether $75,000 should be spent on keeping SnowGlobe on the South Shore. Here is the agenda.

• Bryan and Stefanie Bough completely renovated the old Alpine Realty building on Second Street into Etch Salon. It is South Lake Tahoe’s only Paul Mitchell Focus Salon.

• Todd Borg, author of the award-winning Owen McKenna Tahoe Murder Mystery Thrillers, will discuss his newest book and writing methods on July 31 at 6pm at the South Lake Tahoe library. The event is free.

• Michael Jordan will not be at the annual ACC celeb tournament next month in Tahoe.

• Here is the roadwork schedule for Caltrans for the week for El Dorado-Tahoe and Sierra.

There has been a core group of individuals working together for several years, raising awareness and funds to support “wellness, dignity and independence of El Dorado County seniors and their caregivers”. They call themselves the Friends of El Dorado County Seniors.

Through their newly created Friends of El Dorado Seniors Fund at the El Dorado Community Foundation they are ready for their first granting cycle and offering $3,000 in grants to local not for profit organizations serving seniors in El Dorado County.

Applications are due by 5pm June 30.

South Lake Tahoe is having a meeting June 24 about the Bijou erosion control project.

Construction is scheduled to commence in late June. The 5:30pm gathering is at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.. The construction contractor for the project will be available to answer questions. Plans will be available to view.

The project is located in the Bijou Commercial Core (Fairway, Highway 50 and Bal Bijou Road), Bijou Meadow, Glenwood Way and Woodland Road, and on U.S. Forest Service parcels adjacent to Woodland and Walkup roads. The project includes various water quality improvements.

• Douglas County has been selected to receive a special achievement award in Geographic Information Systems from Environmental Systems Research Institute.

• Truckee’s Tahoe Adventure Company has grown from a handful of kayaks to an entire fleet of equipment geared toward adventure, from snowshoes to mountain bikes to corporate team-building tools in the 10 years it has been in business.

• The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office now has an app for iPhone and iPad.

Prepare for Outdoor Emergencies/Wilderness Safety is the top of Tamara Burns’ lecture on June 12.

The Barton Health registered nurse will talk from 6-7pm at Kahle Community Center in Stateline.

Attendees will learn about the 10 essentials for outdoor adventure. This is designed for those who hike, bike, backpack and climb.

Brenda Yan, a senior at South Tahoe High School, is one of a few students to receive the Horatio Alger California Scholarship.

These scholarships are made possible with generous support from the Carlyse and Arthur Ciocca Charitable Foundation in Northern California. Horatio Alger scholarship recipients have been chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to education, dedication to community service, and strength of character in overcoming personal obstacles to achieve academic excellence.

Each scholar will receive $5,000 that will go toward their college tuition, fees, books and on-campus room and board.

In addition to the scholarship, the students have access to the following opportunities:

· Financial aid and scholarship counseling

· College readiness tools and assessments

· 24/7 support and referral services including crisis response and counseling resources

· Free housing opportunities provided by Campus Crest at 44 campuses across the nation

· Graduate school funding

· Access to a network of their peers and alumni through the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans website, Facebook and LinkedIn.

A fifth-grade student from each elementary school in Lake Tahoe Unified School District was recently honored by the Kiwanis of Lake Tahoe with the Hope of America award.

Each year Kiwanis Clubs across the country bestow this honor on the youth in their community.

The teachers and principals from each school selected their nominee based on: excellence in leadership; ethical and moral character; outstanding citizenship; and academic accomplishments.

The recipients were recognized at a lunch attended by their family, teacher, principal, and Kiwanis members. Each received a $50 gift certificate and plaque.

Taste of Gold — Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation’s biggest fundraiser — is July 13.

It will be from 6-9pm in the college’s Demonstration Garden.

Taste of Gold brings together El Dorado County wines and cuisine from some of the best restaurants in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Proceeds support student success and academic programs at LTCC.
