Six Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery, exiled in Southern India, will return to South Lake Tahoe June 23-30.

They will put on a slide show of monastic life, conduct various Buddhist philosophy teachings and discussions, a Green Tara Empowerment, and a Vajravidarin Healing Ritual over the eight-day visit. They will also offer healings, teachings, and cultural performances including an evening of music and exchange.

Business blessings, house blessings, land blessings, and personal healings are available by appointment.

The Gaden Sharste Monastery was originally founded in Tibet in the mid 1400s and remained an institution of philosophical study prior to its destruction in 1959 when China invaded Tibet. This visit is hosted by the Tahoe Tibetan Cultural Exchange and the South Lake Tahoe Community.

The Loyal Order of the Moose 1632 of South Lake Tahoe’s second annual yard sale is June 15-16 from 9am-5pm.

In addition to the lawn being full of bargains, there will also be a silent auction.

Members of the Moose Lodge and Women of the Moose will be selling baked goods.

All proceeds will go to help support local and national Moose charities including the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League, Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe and Moose Heart.

South Lake Tahoe’s Lead Safe Tahoe program has partnered with Lake Tahoe Community College to provide training.

The Lead Safe Worker eight-hour training for Renovators, Repair and Painters is being offered at LTCC June 22 from 8am-5pm.

The cost is $50

Up to two workers from each local company may participate.

Additional workshop fees are paid for by the city’s grant funding. Scholarships covering the entire cost of the course are available for full-time city residents who meet HUD low income requirements.

This one-day class explains how to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s RRP rule. Subjects covered include; health effects, regulations, lead safe work practices, containment, cleaning and record keeping. After passing an end-of-class exam, students will receive their RRP certificate.

Keep Tahoe Blue Summer Kickoff Party is June 22 from 1-5pm at the League to Save Lake Tahoe in South Lake Tahoe.

Marie Gibson, who founded Sierra Tahoe Fabrics and lived in South Lake Tahoe from 1998 to 2003, is a finalist in Nevada’s entrepreneur business competition for $100,000.

Gibson is now a Reno-based business consultant, college instructor and author. “The Caregiver’s Journal” focuses on helping families successfully manage the hospitalization of a loved one. It recently won the National Caregiver Friendly Award.

If you’re a first-time visitor to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe, be aware that the possibility of becoming hypothermic while involved in water activities is greater here than in warmer climates.

The combination of high altitude and cold alpine water may quickly fatigue a swimmer or water sporter.

Also remember, anyone under 12 years of age is required to wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket while boating on the lake. You must also carry enough life preservers on board for everyone.

Illegal dump spot and trash were cleaned up this month by the Pine Nut Mountains Trail Association.

This year for the annual event group staged at the BLM kiosk and staging area called “Single Tree” on Pine Nut Road No. 2 near the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

With a huge amount of help from the Sierra Stompers 4-wheel drive club, about 39,320 pounds of garbage were removed from the Pine Nut Mountains in one day. This weight total is from the scales at the Douglas Disposal Transfer Station.

The Sierra Nevada Amateur Radio Society is putting on a field day June 23 for people to learn about amateur radio.

It will be at the northwest corner of Wedge Parkway and Whites Creek Lane, across from the South Valleys Library in Reno starting at 11am.

The goal for the day will be to make radio contact with as many other hams as possible.
