Lake Tahoe Community College’s 38th annual commencement ceremony is June 28 at 6pm in the gymnasium.
This year’s graduation ceremony theme is One College, One Community.
This year, 140 students will receive their AA degrees.
Following the ceremony, a reception with light refreshments will be served just outside the gymnasium.
This year’s commencement address will be delivered by Rita Cepeda, a 30-year veteran of the California Community College system.
The annual Family Blast at El Dorado Fairgrounds is July 4 starting at 4pm.
Bring a coolers, propane barbecue and your dancing shoes.
There will be kids’ activities, food and beverages to buy, music from 6-10pm, hay mazes, arts and crafts, and fireworks.

There will be an authors’ fair in Carson City on July 27 from 11am to 3pm.
Books will be available to purchase. Many genres of writing will be represented.

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol recently received grant funding from the Northern Nevada DUI Task Force to host an “If You Drink, Think” event.
It will June 26 from 5-9pm at 1864 Tavern in downtown Reno. Patrons visiting the establishment that evening will be able to log or track the amount of alcohol consumed and then will have the opportunity to submit to field sobriety tests as well as provide a breath sample to learn their level of impairment.
One of the most frequently asked questions is how much alcohol does it take for someone to become intoxicated at the 0.08 percent legal threshold? Because each individual ingests and processes alcohol at a different rate, as well as some other issues such as the size and weight of a person and how much or little food might be in the stomach, can all factor into this equation differently.
Troopers will be interacting with the public that evening to share traffic safety messages in light of the upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend. As part of this grant funded event, taxi-cab rides from Whittlesea Checker Taxi will also be available for those patrons who do not bring a safe and sober driver with them.
The Friends of the Library are bringing history alive in a unique way with Paulette Grune’s “Reflections of the Past”.
Grune shares the life of a Civil War era woman told through her attire.
This is one way to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg. This free presentation is July 13 at 3pm.

• The California Tahoe Conservancy board on June 20 gave Executive Director Patrick Wright his evaluation. Board Chairman Larry Sevison would only tell LTN that a three-member committee has been set up to create goals for Wright. No raise was given.

Norbert Yao’s energetic performances are filled with cultural details about his homeland, Cote d’Ivoire or the “Ivory Coast” of western sub-Saharan Africa.
He learned to play the “talking drums” — djembe and dundun — from family and community members in Africa.
He will be performing July 12 at 2pm at the South Lake Tahoe library for free.
