Lake Tahoe Community College has started a scholarship in honor of a former instructor who passed away in late May. The Carl Young Memorial Earth Science Scholarship is being established to honor the meteorology teacher, who died when he and two colleagues were chasing tornadoes just outside Oklahoma City.

This Earth Science scholarship will be the first of its kind at LTCC.

In addition to being a popular and respected teacher, Young also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from LTCC in 2010 for his accomplishments in his field and his impact on the Tahoe region. He was also a former program manager at the League to Save Lake Tahoe/

Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger will talk July 6 during the opening ceremonies of the Truckee Tahoe Air Fair & Family Festival.

Sullenberger is the US Airways pilot who landed in the Hudson River.

The Truckee event is at 11am, Truckee Tahoe Airport, 10356 Airport Road.

Sullenberger will be signing copies of his book.

The Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to Chris Gerrard and Nic Francis to attend Lake Tahoe Community College in the fall.

The idea for the BE GREAT Graduate Scholarship fund started with Jeff Tillman, Boys & Girls Club board president

Gerrard and Francis volunteered at the club while in high school.

This is the first year of the BE GREAT Graduate Scholarship program.

The Zephyr Cove library is sponsoring “Composting Worms on Tour” with Craig Witt from Full Circle Compost. Come to the gazebo in Zephyr Cove Park on July 11 at 1:30pm to learn about the natural process of composting. Plant a vegetable plant in a pot to take home.

Children ages 5 to 12 will receive a free book.

• Now in its third year, Cowboys and Cornbread is a daylong celebration of western living and old-fashioned fun. It is July 21 from 11am-5pm at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, 100 Placerville Drive, Placerville. It costs $10 per carload (up to six people per car) or $2 walk-in per person.

• The National Football League Foundation has awarded a grant of $250,000 to the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund. The grant will be paid in $50,000 installments over five years. Upshaw died in August 2008 of pancreatic cancer at age 63. The Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund is held by the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation, and benefits the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center and the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research.

• There will be a wine tasting at Raley’s in Incline Village on Aug. 16 from 5-8pm to raise money for the Sugar Pine Foundation. Cost is $10.

• Linda McCall, who owns the Decorating Den Interiors franchise at Lake Tahoe, was named decorator of the year by Decorating Den Interiors, North America’s largest interior design and home furnishings franchise company.

On July 20, the Friends of the Library will be having a huge book sale with hundreds of previously read, and loved books (some new) being sold.

The Green Thumb Workshop Series starts today with a talk about “Food Gardening 101” featuring Christy Daugherty, formerly from the U.S. Forest Service and now part of the Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners.

For people who are interested in making their landscape a little more productive, this is a talk to go to. Learn how to start from seeds and end the season with a bushel of fresh fruits and veggies.
