The Bread & Broth program at St. Theresa Catholic Church is observing its 28th anniversary of serving meals to community members in need by offering a special Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 20 from 4-6pm in the Grace Hall, 1401 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe.

The meal is open to all members of the community just as it has been every Monday since 1989.

The following donations are needed for the meal: carrots, celery, mushrooms, onions, oranges, fresh cranberries, sausage, fried onion toppings and butter. Cash donations are also  appreciated.

Donations will be accepted until Nov. 15 at the Church Rectory office on weekdays between 9am-noon and 1-4pm.

Tahoe Fund is looking to fund projects that help solve the environmental challenges facing Lake Tahoe. 

Submit project ideas online by Jan. 31.

Projects should improve Lake Tahoe’s environment, reduce the risk of wildfire, and address climate change by enhancing water quality, restoring watersheds, creating healthier forests, improving transportation and fostering outdoor recreation. 

Since 2010, the Tahoe Fund has raised funds from private donors for more than 25 environmental improvement projects including new bike paths, watershed restorations, removal of aquatic invasive species and environmental stewardship programs.

Eligible projects must be able to demonstrate how any necessary environmental permits will be obtained, enjoy strong community support, and have other sources of funding identified.

Truckee Chamber of Commerce has created the Truckee Core Values Fund to help support events that reinforce the town’s core values. The fund will be powered by the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, with funding provided by the town of Truckee.

The purpose of this fund is to provide grants for events in Truckee that accomplish two things: high local citizen participation, and strong alignment with at least one primary Truckee core value. The values being healthy lifestyle; family friendly; natural beauty; community minded; arts, culture and history.

Unlike past Truckee chamber event grant funds focused on tourism, these grants are available for year-round events as long as they meet the two most important criteria: local engagement and core value alignment.

The process begins by submitting a letter of interest explaining how/why your nonprofit organization would qualify for funding. Letters are being accepted until Nov. 30. For more info, go online.

·      El Dorado County Auditor-Controller Joe Harn was presented the award for financial transaction reporting by state Controller Betty Yee.

·      Douglas County Sheriff’s Office’s latest deputies are Kendrick Ta, is a resident of the Carson Valley and a 2009 graduate from Douglas High School, and Jose Gutierrez, who immigrated from Honduras and graduated from Reno High School in 2007. Both served in the U.S. military.

·      Truckee is having a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11am at Victory Plaza – Spring Street and Donner Pass Road.

·      Conservative Treatment for Neck and Back Pain is the title of Zachary Child’s Dec. 6 lecture. He is a physician with Barton Health’s Tahoe Center for Orthopedics. The free talk is from 6-7pm in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

·      A $5,000 matching gift by Tahoe Blue Vodka has led to more than $10,000 raised to support the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s beach and community cleanups.

El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office has received a $195,677 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to target repeat DUI offenders.

The grant to the will fund a vertical prosecution team that will work cases from arrest through conviction and sentencing.

In 2014 there were 13 deaths and 45 serious injuries as a result of driving under the influence crashes in El Dorado County.

Prosecution team members will work with California’s Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor Training Network to expand knowledge and resources by obtaining and delivering specialized training, including the emerging problem of drug-impaired driving. Team members will share information with peers and law enforcement throughout the county and state.

South Lake Tahoe’s Boy Scout Troop 594 is partnering with American Legion Post 795 for the 2017 Scouting for Food Collection.

People are asked to bring food items to the American Legion at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe on Nov. 11 between 10-11am. This collection will be just before the annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11am.

Donations should not include glass containers or perishable food.

·      Zawadisha’s Holiday Bazaar is Dec. 3 from 10am-3pm at the Landing Resort in South Lake Tahoe.

·      Mount Rose Ski Resort is officially open for the season. Boreal opens Nov. 8.

·      Barton Health’s annual Festival of Trees and Lights is Nov. 30-Dec. 3 at MontBleu in Stateline.

·      Veterans and active-duty military may ski for free at Mammoth on Veterans Day.

·      Byson Olson of Truckee finished second at the Jet Ski World Championships this fall.

The El Dorado County Planning Commission will consider the Meyers Area Plan on Nov. 9 at 8:30am.

The  meeting will be in Building C at 2850 Fairlane Court, Placerville.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the plan Dec. 12. That meeting begins at 9am in Building A, 330 Fair Lane, Placerville.

Agendas for the meetings will be available online 72 hours before the meetings.

TRPA will take up the Meyers plan in 2018.

·      California Conservation Corps members from Meyers are in Texas for the next month helping clean up the destruction Hurricane Harvey left behind.

·      The gates to Van Sickle Bi-State Park are closed for the winter season. However, the grounds remain open year-round.

·      Assemblyman Kevin Kiley and Clayton Markin, representing Travis Allen, candidate for governor, will be the guest speakers at the El Dorado County Republican Central Committee meeting Nov. 13 at Park Community Church, 3901 Wild Chaparral Drive in Shingle Springs. The meeting begins at 6:30pm and is open to the public.

·      Every Saturday from Nov. 11-Feb. 24 FNCTN, Sierra-at-Tahoe, and Lake Tahoe AleworX will provide the community a free opportunity to gather and watch a movie under the stars at the Crossing in South Lake Tahoe. Entertainment starts at 5pm and movie screenings begin at 6:30pm.
