For six years, G3 has put on the SkiGraphiks Contest that seeks original artwork, the best of which ends up gracing the topsheets of a custom ski.

It has been renamed SheGraphiks for this fall because the contest will focus on encouraging male and female skiers to submit their designs, one of which will be used on a custom version of the new women’s specific Empress 115. The contest is in partnership with Backcountry Babes, an organization founded to empower women through outdoor recreation.

El Dorado County students in grades 8-12 are invited to participate in the juvenile justice system through the Teen Court program.

Volunteer training will be Sept. 26 from 5-6:30pm in El Dorado County Superior Court, Department 4, located at 1354 Johnson Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Upon completion of the mandatory training, teens will serve as court personnel for real cases where a minor has committed an offense, admitted the offense, and chosen to be judged by his/her peers.

Pre-registration for the training is not required. Students must be El Dorado County residents and enrolled in grades 8-12; private school students and home schooled students are also welcome.

Teen Court hearings in South Lake Tahoe will begin Oct. 17 and continue through May 2014. Hearings will be on scheduled Thursday nights at the South Lake Tahoe courthouse.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council needs volunteers for city commissions.

The City Council will be appointing two American with Disability members to the Building/ADA Board of Appeals and one person to serve a two-year term on the Planning Commission.

Applications may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe between 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. Applications may also be downloaded.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 25. The council will make appointments Oct. 1.

The benefits of a bereavement group include sharing emotional connections with others when many cannot find peace with friends and family. In addition, the bereavement group will help teach attendees how to cope with certain situations. Kapilananda Mondal has been promoting microfinance and community development in villages through West Bengal since 1983.

He will speak Sept. 12 at 5pm at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village.

Moving beyond traditional approaches to microfinance, Mondal has introduced microbanking to villagers based on his belief that rural areas can generate investment capital from within their own communities. His approach has spread to hundreds of villages and has caught the attention of microfinance practitioners from around the world.

Partnering with READ Global, he launched the Oceanic Library in the village of Ullon in West Bengal in 2008; the library has became the centerpiece for a village transformation.

The El Dorado County Commission on Aging, in collaboration with the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, is offering a free training series for seniors entitled Boomer Ed 101.

The training will be held on three Monday nights (Sept. 16, 23 and 30) from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the El Dorado Hills Senior Center at 990 Lassen Lane in El Dorado Hills.

The training is targeted for people born between the years of 1948 to 1953, and will focus on several key topics: Medicare (including coverage, benefits, group and private health plans, Parts A, B, C and D); Social Security (when to claim, how it relates to Medicare, etc.); veteran’s issues and more.

Guest speakers will include representatives from the Social Security Administration, the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (Medicare counselors) and El Dorado County Veterans services.

The deadline to register is Sept. 9. A donation of $15 per person or $20 per couple is requested for the class series.
