The Tahoe Area Sierra Club and Aspen Hollow Nursery are having an Autumn Garden Party on Sept. 19.

There will be wine, food and lots of tips to get your garden ready for winter.

The event is at the South Lake Tahoe nursery from 4:30-7pm.

SeptOberfest is Sept. 26 at MontBleu in Stateline.

This is a fundraiser for Kiwanis Club of Tahoe Sierra. The event starts at 6pm.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is looking for Nevada students to showcase their artistic talents and promote radon awareness by entering the 2014 Nevada Radon Poster Contest.

The contest is open to all children ages 9 to 14 who are enrolled in public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense and home schools. Children can also enter through a sponsoring club, such as an art, computer, library, reading, science, scouting, youth or 4-H club.

The poster contest is part of the Nevada Radon Education Program and is sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Kansas State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Posters should convey some of these important messages: 1) What is radon? 2) Where does radon come from? 3) How does radon get into our homes? 4) Radon can cause lung cancer, and 5) Test your home for radon. Posters will be judged on content accuracy, visual communication of the topic, reproducibility and originality. They can be created with crayon, markers, paint, collage, pencil, photographs or computer graphics.

There is no fee to enter, but each child is limited to one entry. Entries must be received by Oct. 31 at the Washoe County Office of Cooperative Extension, 4955 Energy Way, Reno, 89502-4105.

Cash prizes for the top five entries are $75 for first place, $60 for second, $45 for third and $25 for fourth and fifth place.

Washoe County’s Regional Animal Services will offer a free microchipping clinic at the Summit Mall during the inaugural Sheriff’s Office K9 Run on Sept. 28.

The clinic will open at 8am and free microchipping will be available throughout the event.

Pet owners are asked to bring dogs properly leashed and cats in appropriate carriers.

The special clinic is made possible thanks to support from Maddie’s Fund and is part of a year-long campaign by Regional Animal Services to provide free microchips for all Washoe County pets.

The Sheriff’s K9 Run features a 5K, 10K and a Kids 1 Mile Fun Run. This fundraising event is open to all levels of fitness and all ages. Proceeds will go toward equipment and training needed to support the mission of the Washoe County Sheriff’s K9 Unit.
