There will be a fundraiser Sept. 27 for a Kings Beach child who has cerebral palsy and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that is difficult to treat.

Julian Gaube is 5 years old.

The fundraiser will help raise money for an alternative medicine that is not covered by health insurance. The fundraiser is free, and includes music, food, beer, wine, balloon twisting, and face painting. There will also be a silent auction from 6-8pm.

The event is from 5-10pm at the 101 Live, 10152 Church St., Truckee.

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) will give an update on Medicare benefits and costs for 2014 at three free community presentations in El Dorado County.

The meetings are:

Oct. 22 at 12:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center located at 3350 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe

Oct. 25 at 10am at the El Dorado Hills Senior Center located at 990 Lassen Lane in El Dorado Hills

Oct. 28 at 1:30pm at the Placerville Senior Center located at 937 Spring St. in Placerville.

HICAP is a nonprofit organization that gives free, unbiased information and counseling to Medicare beneficiaries, including people soon to become eligible for Medicare. HICAP is not affiliated with any insurance company, nor does it sell, endorse, or recommend any specific insurance product. HICAP counseling sites are located in Placerville, El Dorado Hills and South Lake Tahoe.

The Barton Foundation is looking for tree designers for this year’s Festival of Trees & Lights, Dec. 4-8.

Each year, the festival presents about 13 designer trees for festival participants to vote on and bid on in order to raise money for the annual cause. This year the festival will benefit cardiology services at Barton.

Professional and new designers, creative types and artists are wanted.

The American Century Championship has $85,000 to give to South Shore area charities.

Sixty thousand dollars was previously provided through on-site volunteer efforts to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe and others involved with the annual celebrity golf tournament. American Century Investments also distributed $30,000 among its three national cancer organizations: Livestrong, Expect Miracles Foundation, and American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Local groups may download an application. The deadline to apply is Oct. 11. Recipients will be announced Nov. 1, with checks presented at the LTVA board meeting Nov. 14 at 3pm.

El Dorado Beach in South Lake Tahoe has been a popular place for decades.

Dressing rooms used to be on the beach. For many years there was no restroom. The city put in bathrooms that opened last year when it created what is now Lakeview Commons.

To create the original park-like setting several trees had to be taken down.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a free workshop Oct. 2 to train people throughout the state how to properly handle and use pesticides.

The workshop is meant for certified applicators, people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers.

The training will be at the Washoe County Cooperative Extension office, 4955 Energy Way, Reno and will be made available via videoconference to 12 other Cooperative Extension locations throughout Nevada, including Battle Mountain, Carson City, Caliente, Elko, Ely, Eureka, Fallon, Gardnerville, Hawthorne, Lovelock, Winnemucca and Yerington. The training runs from 7:30am-4:30pm.

The Oct. 2 workshop will help those who have not yet been certified to prepare for the next Certified Pesticide Applicator exam. .
