Young’s Resort stood where today what we identify mostly as Timber Cove and the historic Conolley’s in South Lake Tahoe.

The hotel was recently renamed Beach Retreat & Lodge.

Today’s 700 foot pier at the city-operated Conolley Beach is the longest pier on Lake Tahoe.

Placer County is continuing to update planning documents for the Lake Tahoe Basin as well a having public workshops and releasing two planning documents.

Now available are the Placer County Tahoe Basin Policy Document Existing Conditions Report and the Placer County Kings Beach Vision Plan.

The Existing Conditions Report analyzes environmental resources and hazards, and land use and infrastructure. The report also discusses items that need to be addressed as part of the County’s Community Plan Update and new Area Plans for the Basin.

The Kings Beach Vision Plan is part of the Tahoe Basin Community Plan Update. Both documents may be found here.

Also part of the planning update process is a series of public workshops. Input received at the workshops will help shape the Tahoe Basin Community Plan policy document. All workshops will take place in the North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Blvd., Kings Beach:

The 14th annual Sunset Gala to benefit Live Violence Free is Sept. 27 from 6-9pm.

The event is at Harvey’s Top of the Wheel. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year. Money raised provides funds for all of the organization’s programs and services offered to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse.

The night is used to celebrate the strength of survivors.

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division is conducting a drive-through community flu vaccination clinic on Sept. 26 from 1-4pm at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, located at 100 Placerville Drive in Placerville.

People can get their flu vaccine while staying in their cars.

The cost of the vaccine is $10, but no one will be denied service due to inability to pay; cash or check accepted. Seniors and other high risk individuals are especially encouraged to get vaccinated.

The flu vaccine will be offered in both the shot and nasal mist forms. The nasal mist flu vaccine can be given to healthy, non-pregnant individuals who are 2 through 49 years of age. Parents should bring their child’s immunization records.

• When motorcycle and bicycle riders are stopped at a traffic signal, they may be unable to trigger a green light to proceed. Starting Oct. 1 in Nevada, if cyclists have waited for two traffic light cycles, they may legally move through the intersection on red, but only after safely yielding to pedestrians and other traffic.

• A federal appeals court ruled that New Jersey cannot legalize sports gambling.

• The seventh annual Poker Run to benefit Austin’s House raised nearly $10,000 to help local children in crisis.

• El Dorado County Elections Department will be observing National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 24 by setting up tables and chairs outside Building C in Placerville to register people or people may do so online.

• South Lake Tahoe’s dog agility equipment at Bijou Dog Park will be unveiled Sept. 22 at 1pm.

The Douglas County Public Library is bringing local authors to the Minden branch on Oct. 2 from 4:30 to 6:30pm.

This free event will feature appearances by Todd Borg, Mike White, David Antonucci, Gary Cage, Bob Chambers, Luke Hart, Ron James, Sandie La Nae, Christy Olesen, Josée Perrine, Jodie Ruana, and Luther Watson. They will sell their books, meet readers, and sign autographs.

The Zawadisha Fund’s third annual Zawadisha Holiday Bazaar will be at Bona Fide HQ in Meyers on Dec. 7.

The Zawadisha Fund provides small business loans to female entrepreneurs in Kenya.

Lake Tahoe Community College library will be offering a free, weekly Career Clinic on Wednesdays starting Oct. 2 and going through November.

Each session is from 1-3pm with consultant Michael Donahoe. The clinic is available to everyone, not just students.

The clinic is designed to help people with:

• Developing career goals and educational plans.

• Job interview preparation.

• Updating your resume or completing a job application.

• Understanding what employers are currently looking for, and how to provide it.

• Personality assessments – targeting jobs that best match your interests.

The Tahoe area is in need of foster and adoptive homes for local kids.

On any given day in South Lake Tahoe there are approximately 100 foster children in need of care. Foster parents are provided with training, financial stipends, and 24-hour support staff. Foster children come with medical and dental insurance.

There will be a training for new foster and adoptive parents on Oct. 5 and Oct. 12.

The Douglas County Community Services Foundation has arranged with Sertoma Oktoberfest event to honor pre-sold tickets purchased for the Labor Day free concert in the park which was canceled due to smoke.

Sertoma annual Oktoberfest is Sept. 22 from noon to 4pm at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.
