·      Both branches of the Douglas County library will be hosting Christmas ornament decorating events. The Zephyr Cove event is Dec. 6, 4-6pm, and the Minden one is Dec. 5, 4-6pm. All crafting supplies will be provided, and adult-level coloring pages will also be available as an extra art project. These crafting programs are drop-in and open to all ages; however, those ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

·      Tahoe Vista Recreation Area boat ramp is closed for the season.

·      Sierra Nevada College choir’s 32nd annual Holiday Concert is bringing Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria” to Incline Village on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2 at 7pm at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Tickets are $20 at the door.

·      On Dec. 16 at 1pm Friends of the South Lake Tahoe Library presents Sierra Strings of Tahoe. This will be an afternoon of music to usher in winter and the holiday season. It is free and open to all ages. The library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·      Verde restaurant in Meyers has closed so the owners can concentrate on their eatery in the Crossings center in South Lake Tahoe.

In celebration of the holiday season, the South Lake Tahoe Library welcomes families of all ages to join the Winter Extravaganza.

Creation stations will be set up with easy to make, seasonal decorations suitable for all ages.

Santa and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to drop by, so bring a camera.

The event will be Dec. 2 from 10am-2pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·      Here are the El Dorado-Tahoe and Sierra roadwork schedules from Caltrans for the week.

·      From Nov. 18-Dec. 2, Washoe County sheriff’s deputies, along with the Reno and Sparks police departments and Nevada Highway Patrol will dedicate extra deputies specifically to look for drivers and other occupants in vehicles who are not wearing their seat belts, as well as children who are not properly secured in a car or booster seat.

·      Eric Sandel, 76, of Truckee has been reappointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, where he has served since 1992.

·      Truckee’s next cannabis dialogue meeting will be Nov. 28, 6pm at the airport.

·      Washoe County Sheriff’s Office’s retired K9 Gunner died. Gunner’s partner, retired Deputy John Kimberlin was by his side. Gunner served WCSO from 2007-14.

·      Sharon Romack has been hired as executive director of Valhalla Tahoe.

·      Free flu shots will be given on Nov. 27 from 4-5:30pm during Bread & Broth’s weekly meal at Grace Hall in South Lake Tahoe.

·      Getaway Transit, a Bay Area-based company, is starting a shuttle service to the South and North Shores of Lake Tahoe. If funding comes through, service would start in April.

·      Frontier airlines on Nov. 21 will begin offering nonstop flights between Reno and Denver.

·      The Bicycle Advisory Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will meet Dec. 6 from 9-11am at City Council Chambers.

Douglas County is looking for applicants for the 2017-18 Community Grant Program.

Criteria for funding is online.

The Board of Commissioners will make the final decision as to which agencies are funded.

BloodSource will host a South Lake Tahoe blood drive on Dec. 1.

The drive is sponsored by the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Walk-ins are welcome. 

Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be at least 16 years old (16 and 17 year olds will need a signed BloodSource Parental consent form) and be generally healthy. There is no upper age limit for blood donations. Donors must bring a photo ID and should drink plenty of fluids before donating.

It will be at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center on Rufus Allen Boulevard from noon-5pm.

·       Truckee Planning Commission will have a public hearing on Nov. 21 at 6pm on the proposed Capitol Avenue Grocery Store development permit. The meeting will be at the airport.

·      The Community Christmas Concert is Dec. 21 at 6:30pm at Olympic Valley Lodge.

·      Hard Rock Lake Tahoe is planning to have a New Years’ Eve Countdown Party on Dec. 31 from 9pm-12:30am out at Guitar Plaza.

·      State Sen. Ted Gaines, R-El Dorado, earned an A grade for the 11th year in a row on the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association’s 2017 Legislative Scorecard, which grades lawmakers on their votes on issues related to taxpayers.

·      Bread & Broth’s annual free Thanksgiving dinner will be Nov. 20, 4-6pm at Grace Hall at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston earned the the Ed Bent Training Excellence Award in recognition of being the Outstanding Fire Instructor of the Year.

Each year during the California Training Officers’ Fall Training Symposium a fire service instructor is honored. The award was created many years ago on behalf of Ed Bent for his contribution as a founding father of statewide training and curriculum for the California Fire Service.

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry stated, “I am not surprised Chief Meston was nominated and chosen for this award. Chief Meston has a rich history as an instructor, both with those in the fire service and citizens, throughout his career. Under his leadership, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue developed the city’s STAT program which trains our local citizenry on disaster response. He’s an exemplary leader and trainer and we are fortunate to serve alongside him here at the city.”

Truckee Donner Public Utility District this season will again swap out old, incandescent holiday lights for free energy efficient LED holiday lights for its customers.

The LED holiday light exchange begins Nov. 20 at 8am and will continue while supplies last.

Customers are asked to bring in a copy of their current TDPUD electric bill along with up to three strands of old incandescent holiday lights. The TDPUD will replace them with your choice of up to 60 feet of warm white or multicolor LED lights.

These energy-efficient holiday lights can save between 80-98 percent on energy costs versus the old-style incandescent lights. They also look great.

The cost for each Level Up workshop is $10 for chamber members and $20 for others.
