Board of Equalization member George Runner will host a telephone townhall for restaurant owners on Oct. 28 at 10am.

The event, co-hosted by the California Restaurant Association, will provide specific information on tax issues important to the dining and beverage industry.

Among the many tax challenges facing restaurant owners, caterers, and food truck operators are the “80/80 Rule” and tax rates for hot and cold food, food sold “to-go”, tips and gratuity charges, beverage sales, employee meals and complimentary food and beverages.

“Dateline” is airing an episode Oct. 18 involving a Reno family who was in a shootout at their rural Sierra cabin.

Their family cabin, where this all took place, is about one hour from Susanville near the Antelope Lake area. The cabin is approximately two hours from Quincy, where the trial took place.

The story focuses on Chad Wallin-Reed, a husband and father, and a summer night that would change his life forever.

The show airs on NBC at 9pm.

The 28th annual Red Ribbon Week is this month and the National Family Partnership has launched its monthlong national contest.

Ten families across America will win $1,000 for their school and an iPad for their home. This campaign is for prevention of drug and alcohol abuse by youth. More info about the contest is online.

Winners will be announced Dec. 6 and recognized at winning schools throughout December.

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign, reaching more than 80 million people nationwide.

The DEA is co-sponsoring this year’s national contest.

• South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis will give a state of the city address on Nov. 5 at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.

• Tahoe Donner is hosting a winter job fair Oct. 19 from 11am-6pm at the Northwoods Clubhouse located at 11509 Northwoods Blvd.

• Charter Communications customers in the South Lake Tahoe area will soon have access to more than 150 high definition channels as part of an all-digital upgrade. Charter this summer began clearing all analog signals from its local network, making way to add more than 130 HD channels in El Dorado, Placer and Douglas counties.

• “Lake Tahoe: Can We Save It?” is a 30-minute documentary produced by KQED television producer Gabriela Quiros. It examines the lake’s storied history and the small army of scientists and others who are working daily to turn back the clock to a time when you could see 100 feet down into its blue waters.

Weather conditions permitting, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District is planning on conducting a prescribed burn in the 1st Creek drainage above Knotty Pine Drive and Dale Drive and west of Bronco Court and Matchless Court on Oct. 17-18.

The project is approximately 15 acres on IVGID property.

Smoke resulting from the understory burn will affect the surrounding areas for approximately 24 hours. People that are smoke sensitive are advised to please stay inside and close their windows and doors as much as possible until the smoke dissipates.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe has money to give to nonprofits for community service projects and programs.

Each year the service club awards grants that provide services to the South Lake Tahoe area. SISLT’s goal is to fund quality projects that serve clearly identified needs of women and children on the South Shore.

SISLT is accepting applications in three categories; programs or projects from $1,000-$2,500, between $2,500 and $7,500, and more than $7,500. A maximum of $25,000 will be distributed.
