The Tahoe Regional Young Professionals’ annual Winter White FUNdraiser returns Nov. 23.

The white-themed holiday party supports TRYP’s professional development programs like workshops and scholarships, while also raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe.

Appetizers, festive drink specials including Riva Grill’s infamous Wet Woody, dancing, silent auction and raffle prizes plus a Winter White costume contest highlight the 6:30-10pm event.

Today’s Zephyr Cove Resort has roots dating back 150 years to the 1860s.

E.B. Scott described the first building (in his book “The Saga of Lake Tahoe”) as “…an ostentatious T-shaped hotel.” It became popular with travelers heading to Virginia City.

The early 1930s photo shows the later Zephyr Cove Store and gas pump. That store building has been enlarged and today includes a restaurant at its north end.

Millionaire George Whittell, who owned most of the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe, added Zephyr Cove to his land holdings in 1938. As I recall, Tahoe Harrah’s briefly had a part in the resort’s operation in the mid-1960s.

Zephyr Cove Resort now is managed by Aramark Parks and Destinations by special use permit from the U.S. Forest Service.

The next two Tech Tuesday courses will focus on tips and tricks for using Microsoft Office suites.

These workshops are suitable for all levels of computer skills, particularly businesses and individuals already using Microsoft products who would like to learn to use them more effectively.

In November, Sanne Steele, the software consultant and Microsoft certified partner, will be taking attendees on an interactive tutorial of Word, Excel and Outlook. December’s course will be more graphically oriented, diving into PowerPoint and Publisher.

The classes are at Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in Stateline on Nov. 5 and Dec. 3 from 8-9:30am. They are free for chamber members and $15 for prospective members. Bring a laptop.

More than 45 California Conservation Corps members bucked and split wood on California Tahoe Conservancy property this month that will be distributed by Kiwanis to seniors and disabled in the basin.

Corps members participated in service projects around the state on this Volunteer Day.

The wood was generated by the U.S. Forest Service Upper Truckee River restoration project. This four-year project includes Conservancy property. The Conservancy took the lead on salvaging the extra wood.

The Kiwanis Club is organizing distribution. Seniors or disabled individuals who are interested in the wood may contact Richard Dart at (530) 543.0805.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is taking nominations for the Lake Spirit Awards.

The public is encouraged to nominate members of community who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect the beauty and clarity of the Lake.

A North Shore and South Shore winner will be selected in each category.

Nominations for the Lake Spirit Awards can be made online, and will be accepted through Dec. 2. Winners will be announced at TRPA’s Governing Board meeting on Dec. 18.

Several long-time residents will be looking back on local history Nov. 12 at 7pm in the lodge of Camp Richardson.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is putting on the event. Cost is $3 for non-members, no charge for members.

Additional Nevada Highway Patrol troopers will be on duty the three-day Nevada Day holiday weekend, as well as next Friday and Saturday evening in the greater Reno-Sparks area, in an effort to identify any motorists who may be impaired.

With federal funding secured by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety’s Joining Forces grant program, this particular initiative will allocate 15 additional overtime shifts in an effort for an increased presence of troopers to be highly visible saturating our area highways during these periods. Several of the troopers scheduled for this weekend’s assignment will be working closely with officers from the Reno Police Department.

Audio 101 is a three-day workshop with six-hour sessions that will cover topics such as how the ear perceives sound, acoustics, and sound travel.

There will be hands-on learning of setting up a sound system with speakers, basic connections, equalization, mixing and routing of signals, as well as power management.

The workshop is Nov. 4-6 from 9am-4pm each day, including lunch at Tahoe Production House — 2291 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
