Scam artists are calling people in Northern Nevada claiming they are with the Professional Firefighters of Nevada, and then are asking people to send money.
This group does not solicit money via telephone.
The group does have a coats for kids campaign going on now and also does a boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
A $69,136 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to the Placer County Probation Department will be making sure that worst-of-the-worst DUI offenders are complying with all court orders.
The grant will fund officers to intensely monitor drivers on probation for felony DUI or multiple misdemeanor DUI convictions. Supervision for these high-risk offenders will include unannounced home searches, random alcohol and drug testing and monitoring to ensure compliance with court-ordered DUI education and treatment programs.
The Intensive Probation Supervision for High-Risk Felony and Repeat DUI Offenders grant is aimed at reducing the number of people killed and injured in alcohol and other drug-related collisions in the county. In 2011, five people were killed and 221 injured in such crashes in Placer County.
The Placer County Probation Department will also collaborate with other local law enforcement agencies to conduct DUI/Driver license checkpoints and warrant service operations targeting individuals who fail to make court appearances after DUI arrests.

Eight members of the South Tahoe Middle School Junior S Club and their school adviser received a special certificate last week from Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra.
SITS is the sponsor of the group.
The girls meet each week with the focus to identify ways that they can help and volunteer. They have taken on projects at their school, in the community, across the country, and even globally.

The Animal Coalition of Tahoe is having a fundraiser at Tahoe Bowl. The money raised will keep the spay-neuter program going.
Bowl, dine and drink at Tahoe Bowl on Nov. 8 from 6-8pm. A portion of the proceeds will benefit ACT’s spay-neuter program and the El Dorado County Animal Shelter. There will also be a raffle.
Tahoe Bowl is offering a 20 percent discount on food.
The Animal Coalition of Tahoe is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that raises funds to help local residents spay and neuter their dogs and cats in an effort to reduce the population of unwanted pets.

El Dorado County Office of Education is organizing a coat drive. Donations will be distributed to schools and EDCOE operated programs throughout the county, including Lake Tahoe.
New coats ranging in sizes from infant to adult may be dropped off at the El Dorado County Office of Education at 6767 Green Valley Road in Placerville between 8am-5pm. All donations should be submitted to the office no later than Dec. 6.

Sculptures by Simi Dabah are being added to the Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden.
Dabah has been creating sculptures as a hobby for years, and his works can be found throughout California, including several public libraries, municipal buildings and schools around the state.
Dabah donated four of his refurbished metal sculptures to LTCC.
Craig Thomas of the Sierra Forest Legacy will give a presentation on conservation strategies for national forests on Nov. 13.
He will speak about fire ecology, sustainable forest practices and future plans for the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Thomas has been intimately involved in the protection and restoration of the forests of the Sierra Nevada for more than 25 years and continues working to find solutions to the threats facing Sierra Nevada forests and communities today.

Unmanned aerial systems, or drones, may be relatively small, but could have a big impact on Nevada’s economy and natural resources, especially when the necessary pieces and experts come together to do the work and research.
To that end, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and the University’s Center for Economic Development at the College of Business, is having a public workshop on unmanned aerial systems, with a focus on how communities in Nevada can become involved with this economic initiative. The workshop will be broadcast 9am-3pm Nov. 18 from Cooperative Extension’s Lifelong Learning Center in Las Vegas via videoconference to 16 locations in Nevada, including the UNR campus.
The workshop has three parts. Morning presentations will be about efforts to bring the unmanned aerial systems industry to Nevada, a lunch panel will introduce representatives from the Nevada System of Higher Education who are involved in UAS research and instructional efforts, and an afternoon session will focus on applications and economic incentives.
