Gene Rasmussen’s resignation from the El Dorado County board of education on Nov. 6 has created a vacancy for the Lake Tahoe region.

The board wants to appoint someone Dec. 10 to fill out the term which expires in November 2016. Residents of District 5 may apply. The deadline to submit an application is Dec. 3.

The South Lake Tahoe Library will be filled with holiday music on Dec. 14 starting at 2pm.

Festive music will be provided by Dream Spirit. They will feature traditional Christmas tunes, and popular classics. Refreshments provided by Friends of the Library.

Entry is a non-perishable food item for Christmas Cheer.

The Friends of the Library Book Sale is the place to get great books at bargain prices.

The event is Nov. 16 from 10am-3pm.

All proceeds benefit Friends of the Library and are used to support various library services, and free programs for children, teens and adults.

In 1963, Pioneer Trail was paved only from Highway 50 near Stateline to just south of the Glenwood Way junction.

It was a very bumpy dirt trail beyond that, an original portion of which still exists parallel with today’s paved road, running alongside STPUD’s black-lined holding ponds and the KTHO radio towers. It serves now as a gated STPUD access road at Black Bart Avenue just behind the closed postal neighborhood delivery center building).

Pioneer Trail was also once the Pony Express route.

The construction and joining of Al Tahoe Boulevard circa 1965 resulted in paving all of Pioneer Trail.

Douglas County created a Road Funding Task Force to help provide solutions to the county’s road funding challenges.

The goal is to identify the most viable and appropriate sources of funding, and to gain public support for any proposed solutions.

The task force is hosting public workshops on Nov. 18 and Nov. 20 to share information about the funding issues and to collect public feedback. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer forum.

The first workshop is Nov. 18 at 6pm at Topaz Ranch Estates Volunteer Fire Station, 1476 Albite Drive, Topaz.

The next one is Nov. 20 at 6pm at CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave., Minden.

• South Lake Tahoe is closing its administrative offices from Dec. 23-Jan. 2 to remove some of the vacation time on the books. Minimal staff will be on hand.

• A familiar face is no longer at the Raley’s at the Y. Tammy Goldenberg retired last month.

• There will be a Veterans Day ceremony at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Monday at 11am.

•At the Nov. 12 7:30pm Economic Development Workshop in Truckee there will be a discussion about how to incorporate the river into redevelopment.

• The penalty phase for convicted murderer Joseph Nissensohn has been pushed back to Dec. 2.

The Friends of the El Dorado County Veterans Monument will host the 8th annual Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11am.

The event is at the El Dorado County Veterans Monument, 360 Fair Lane, Placerville.

Retired Navy Capt. John Poimiroo will be the guest speaker.

Knee injury awareness and treatments will be discussed Nov. 13 from 6-7pm.

Dr. Robert Rupp and therapist Ryan Solberg will talk about knee anatomy, current knee injury trends and sports-related injuries, surgical treatment and management, how to avoid knee injuries and pre-season conditioning exercises.

The Barton health lecture will be at Sierra Nevada College, Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences Building, Room 139, 999 Tahoe Blvd., Incline Village.

• Diane Baker Roberts of Carson City is the latest inductee into the Reno Tahoe Tennis Hall of Fame. She regularly plays on teams out of Zephyr Cove. For 31 years she has been the Carson High School girls’ coach.

• Candy Cane Lane, the Cason Valley Inn’s custom outdoor drive-through Christmas light display will be available for nightly viewing starting Thanksgiving weekend.

• Truckee is on a campaign to get people to pick up after their dog so it won’t get into waterways. The info goes so far as to say, “If you think picking up dog poop is unpleasant, try swimming in it.” More info is online.
