Dec. 16 –North side of Highway 50 in Meyers (lower Apache, Magnet School), behind Station 7 (Cornelian Drive, Navahoe Drive, Cheyenne Drive).

Dec. 17 – North of Pioneer Trail from Highway 50 to Elks Club (Southern Pines Drive, Tionontati Street, Meadow Vale Drive), Player Drive

Dec. 18 – Upper Apache Drive and Mandan Street

Dec. 19 – Pioneer Trail from Busch Way to Washoan Boulevard (Glen Eagles Drive, Hekpa Drive)

• Lake Tahoe Pizza Company in South Lake Tahoe is open after months of refurbishing because of a fire.

• South Shore and North Shore are contenders in USA Today’s contest to be North America’s best ski destination. Vote online.

• Squaw Valley and the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association are putting on the Lake Tahoe Wedding Faire at Squaw Valley on Feb. 1 from 11am-3pm.

• Alpine Meadows and Homewood Mountain Resort plan to open Dec. 13. Tickets that day at Alpine will be $59, with all proceeds going to the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Foundation.

• Megan Kasden of Incline Village won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium.

Light up South Lake Tahoe is Dec. 7.

City emergency vehicles will be decorated with lights and lead a procession from Stateline to the Y starting at 6pm. People are invited to join in the makeshift parade.

The tree at the Y by the Factory Outlet Stores will be lighted, South Tahoe Children’s Choral Society will sing and South Tahoe High School’s brass band will play.

Santa will be there, too, and hot cocoa provided to help take off the chill.

This will be the second year Catalina Rodriguez’s Dancers and Tahoe Dream Foundation’s Directors will perform Aztec Dances at Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast and Celebration at Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church in Zephyr Cove.

It is a fundraiser for the Our Lady Of Tahoe Catholic Church.

The event is Dec. 12 from 5:30-9pm at the Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church in Zephyr Cove on Elks Point Road. All are welcome. After the liturgy and the performances there will be a feast to celebrate the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

• The U.S. Forest Service has sold-out of its Christmas tree permits in the basin.

The staff at Austin’s House has produced a 2014 calendar featuring artwork drawn by children who have stayed at the facility.

The calendar is $10. To place your order, call (775) 267.6711 Monday through Friday from 10am-4pm.

Austin’s House is the only emergency children’s shelter in rural Northern Nevada. The staff provides services and care for up to 10 children from infants to age 18. The children are placed at Austin’s House after being removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. The facility depends on support from the community to keep the doors open.

Kyle Van Mouwerik developed a sudden acute illness that left him paralyzed while working a wildland fire last summer for Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

He has been in the hospital since he came down with Guillain Barre Syndrome.

On Dec. 6 there will be a fundraiser for him at Himmel Haus Restaurant, 3819 Saddle Road, South Lake Tahoe. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Dinner, beer and live music will be provided. Doors open at 5pm, dinner is at 6pm.

Twelve Lake Tahoe residents will be part of UNR’s winter commencement Dec. 7 at Lawlor Events Center.

A total of 1,075 bachelor’s degrees and 386 advanced degrees or certificates (master’s and doctoral degrees and education specialist certificates) will be awarded.
