·      Barton Health’s Robert Maloff Center for Excellence in South Lake Tahoe has been certified as a U.S. Ski & Snowboard center of excellence.

·      Bring old books back to life by creating works of art from the pages. The Douglas County Public Library is hosting the artists of My Thousand Words at the Zephyr Cove Library on July 25 from 5-7pm and at the Minden Library on July 30 from 5-7pm. Artists Debbie and Rachel Lambin will show participants how to create sculptures from used books and magazines. This class is free and designed for adults. The books and sculpting materials will be provided.

·      Football great turned wine aficionado Charles Woodson is having a wine tasting event July 14 at 7pm at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe. Woodson is in town playing the celebrity golf tournament. Tickets range from $79 to $179. More info is online.

·      The Douglas County Public Library is having an outdoor storytime at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa on July 20 at 11am. Children of all ages are invited.

·      Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation’s annual Taste of Gold fundraiser is July 21, 6-9pm at the demonstration garden on campus. Tickets are $75 and are available online.

·      Tahoe Mountain Realty in partnership with Tahoe Mountain Club will open the Tahoe Mountain Hub at Old Greenwood in Truckee, a shared public workspace, on July 19.

·      Dustin Clifford is the newest deputy at Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

·      The South Lake Tahoe Library will host Mad Science on July 13. The free outdoor show starts at 2pm at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. Mad Science will be performing their show Spin, Pop Boom where kids will be taught about basic chemistry while seeing experiments such as an explosive foam factory.

·      The Active 20 – 30 Club of the Carson Valley has donated $5,000 to the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department for youth participating in county sports programs.

·      South Lake Tahoe Library will be hosting an art program for children ages 8-13 on July 19 from 2-3pm. Children will learn about abstract art and create an artwork of their own to keep. Space is limited, registration required by calling 530.573.3185.

·      The Country Gone Wild after party with Moonshine Bandits will immediately follow the Keith Urban concerts. The parties are July 21 and July 22 at Blu Nightclub inside MontBleu at Stateline. Must be 21 to attend. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 each night.

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water Quality Planning has approximately $1 million in federal funding available to provide grant assistance for projects that prevent or control nonpoint source water pollution, the leading cause of water quality impairment in Nevada. 

Nonpoint source water pollution occurs when rain, snowmelt and irrigation water flows over developed or disturbed land, carrying with it contaminants including oil, sediment, pesticides, bacteria and nutrients. This contaminated water makes its way into Nevada’s waterways either directly or through storm drains.

All proposals must follow the guidelines on the application that is online. State, local and tribal governments, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions are eligible to apply. A non-federal match (cash and/or in-kind) of at least 50 percent of the total project cost is required.

Proposals will be accepted between July 9 and Aug. 24, 2018.            

Motorists should anticipate overnight lane closures on Highway 28 from July 15 through July 19 as roadway shoulders and drainage systems are cleaned.

Single lane closures and travel delays of up to 30 minutes should be anticipated on are expected on those dated from between 6pm and 4:30am daily. The mobile road improvement operation is scheduled to begin in the Crystal Bay area on July 15, and move eastward over the following nights.

Roadside drainage, shoulders and slopes will be cleared of debris for a safer roadway and improved area water quality.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care will be having a meet and greet on July 12 for the community to find out about and see the progress being made on the new rehab center.

The event will be at the site of the new facility at 1551 Al Tahoe Blvd. It is between Pioneer Village and Pioneer Trail.

It will be from 4-7pm. 

LTWC volunteers and board members will be on hand to talk about each cage.

·      Tahoe Transportation District will have a public hearing at the board meeting on July 13 at 9:30am at the Stateline office to discuss three proposals for transit on the South Shore. Go online for more info.

·      Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District reported a mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile virus this week. The sample was collected from a site along the county’s western border. 

·      Dates have been set for the 2019 Mountain Bike Festival in Meyers – June 22-23.

·      The Placer County Grand Jury weighed in on what it thinks the county is doing regarding affordable housing. Here is the report.

·      Ski Run Marina is having a mural dedication on July 18, 6:30pm. Charles Goldman, who is credited with much of Lake Tahoe’s preservation, will be there to read a poem.

·      Nevada Highway Patrol officers are working overtime now through July 13 to enforce speed limit laws.

·      Lake Tahoe Community College accounting/business instructor Jon Kingsbury, world languages instructor Catalina Goralski, and biological sciences instructor Sue Kloss are all being honored for their work in the classroom and their dedication to students. Kingsbury was chosen by his colleagues as the distinguished faculty award winner. Goralski was selected as distinguished adjunct instructor of the year. Kloss was selected by LTCC’s students for teacher of the year.
