• Caltrans reported that the percent of healthy pavement on the state highway system increased from 75 to 84 percent from 2011 to 2013 – an increase of 4,500 lane miles of smoother pavement.

• According to the Associated Press, “South Korea said a consortium of Las Vegas-based Caesars Entertainment and Indonesia’s Lippo conglomerate has received a preliminary license to build a casino-resort near the country’s largest airport, stepping up competition among Asian countries to lure Chinese tourists.” Caesars is the parent company of Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harveys.

• South Lake Tahoe is working to make codes less confusing to business owners. There will be two workshops for the public to give input — April 2 and May 7 from 5:30-7pm at Lake Tahoe Airport.

• Diamond Peak Ski Resort was awarded three Gold ADDY awards for its website.

• The Bicycle Advisory Committee of the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Facilities Joint Powers Authority will meet April 4 from 9-11am in meeting room adjacent to the City Council Chambers at Lake Tahoe Airport.

The Spring Caregiver Series 2014 is series of six-week classes designed to assist caregivers of all stages, while providing professional knowledge on aging related topics. The classes will begin April 7 and will continue for six concurrent Mondays.

The Douglas County Public Library’s storytime will resume at the Kahle Community Center in April and continue through June 5.

Preschool stories take place on alternate Thursday and Friday mornings from 9-9:30am. Thursday dates are: April 10 and 24; May 8 and 22; and June 5. Friday dates are: April 4; May 2, 16, and 30.

Younger children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Caltrans and Southwest Gas Corporation will be co-hosting two meetings on March 26 to update the public on a project to improve Highway 89 on the West Shore.

The meetings will be at the Tahoe City Public Utility District office at 221 Fairway Drive in Tahoe City. There will be a morning session at 10:30 and an evening session at 6.

Caltrans and Southwest Gas staff members will be on hand to recap work completed in the 2013 construction season, as well as plans for 2014 and to answer questions from the public about the project.

Caltrans’ contractor on the $41 million environmental improvement project, Road and Highway Builders LLC of Sparks, installed nine sand vaults in the Homewood area last season. This year roadwork will begin near the county line in Tahoma and extend to Cherry Street. Work should start May 1.

Southwest Gas’ contractor will be working farther north on the highway, between Ward Creek and just north of Granlibakken Road, to finish relocating gas lines that are in conflict with Caltrans’ project. This work is scheduled to begin in April, weather permitting, and continue through October.

Caltrans’ project will extend into 2016 when work is completed at the junction of highways 89 and 28 in Tahoe City.

South Lake Tahoe Firemen’s Association is sponsoring a hands only CPR training on March 22.

There will be 15-minute training sessions between 11:30am and 2pm at Basecamp Pizza in the Heavenly Village.

It is free.

The South Lake Tahoe DMV office is temporarily closing for renovations starting March 26 at noon.

During the long weekend of renovation crews will replace the carpet, upgrade the testing area, and install a window in the control cashier room. Other renovations will be made to bring the office to ADA compliance.

The South Lake Tahoe office will reopen April 1.

The nearest offices are in Truckee and Placerville.

For decades scientists have studied the health and clarity of the deep waters of Lake Tahoe, but now the research boats are coming closer to shore.

Alan Heyvaert of the Desert Research Institute will present research findings and recommendations that address Lake Tahoe’s aquatic nears hore environment. This public lecture is April 3 at 6pm, hosted by the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is at 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village.
