El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office is partnering with Uber to encourage local residents to use safe rides to reduce impaired driving.

This comes on the heels of a similar partnership with Lyft.

The program with Uber offers a $10 discount to any new Uber rider whose origin or destination is in El Dorado, Sacramento, Yolo, or Placer counties. The offer is valid through Jan. 7 using the code SAFERIDE2018. There will also be $2 off up to 2 discounted rides for existing Uber users available through Jan. 2 using the code SAFEUBER2018.

People wanting to run for an office in El Dorado County may take out the paperwork now for the June 5 primary.

Declaration of candidacy forms and nomination papers can be filed beginning Feb. 12.

All El Dorado County elected offices are up, including supervisorial districts 4 and 5, the latter being Lake Tahoe.

The last day to file for one of these offices is March 9.

More than 26 Nevada law enforcement agencies are joining forces between now and Jan. 2, targeting impaired drivers who not only pose threats to themselves, but passengers and other road users. 

During the past five years, an average of 300 people died in drunken driving crashes during the Christmas through New Year’s holiday period. In December 2016 alone, 781 people lost their lives in drunken driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association.

Law enforcement reminds people that buzzed driving is drunken driving.

From Dec. 18 to Jan. 2, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office will dedicate extra deputies specifically to look for drivers under the influence.

Funding for these extra patrols is made possible by a Joining Forces grant received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program aimed at reducing injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, speed, distracted driving, seat belt and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.

·      Whittell High School’s National Honor Society will be wrapping gifts at the Round Hill Post Office on Dec. 16 from 10am-2pm. Donations will go toward the spring semester service project.

·      A second free movie has been added to the entertainment lineup at Lake Tahoe AleWorX in South Lake Tahoe on Dec. 16. “Christmas Vacation” will be shown at 5pm, with “Tight Loose” at 7pm.

The Nevada Department of Transportation wants public input on the State Management Plan, which defines the administration of federal funding to rural transit services.

Nevada’s local transit services provide more than 5 million rides a year.

Each year, NDOT utilizes nearly $10 million in Federal Transit Administration funds to support local transit, including purchasing more than 400 buses and other vehicles for local transit providers over the past 35 years.

·      The first tree run in the Shirley zone at Squaw Valley was renamed “Mac & Ernie’s” for the 2017-18 season to honor and thank Ryan McInerney, president at Visa, and his family for their donation to Waterkeeper Alliance. Waterkeeper Alliance is the largest nonprofit solely focused on clean water, fighting for every community’s right to drinkable, fishable, swimmable water. The trail name was awarded to McInerney during the fundraising gala and auction celebrating the World Cup at Squaw Valley last March. 

·      Carolyn Grubb, who was the glue holding the Valhalla Festival together through some turbulent times, is retiring now that the art-music festival is on solid footing.
