South Lake Tahoe is celebrating Earth Day on April 26 at Bijou Community Park from 10am to 4pm.

There will be live music and opportunities to learn about ways to counteract global climate change through recycling and composting, alternative energy, water conservation, sustainability, and reducing our ecological footprint.

The event is free.

Eight local organizations are sharing $25,000 thanks to Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe.

The organizations and associated projects receiving money include:

Tahoe Youth & Family Services, The Girls Project and the Drug Store Project; Tahoe Arts Project, Performing Arts in our Schools; Tahoe Tallac Association, Valhalla 2014 Music on the Lawn; El Dorado County, Ag in the Classroom; Girls on the Run, South Lake Tahoe Program; El Dorado County Search & Rescue, Arizona Vortex Tripod; Live Violence Free; Christmas Cheer, Christmas Toy and Food Distribution Project 2014.

Soroptimist raises money for these grants through its annual wine tasting event in November.

• South Lake Tahoe is having a meeting about the Harrison Avenue project on April 24 from 6-8pm at the senior center.

• Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Health and Wellness Roundtable on April 30 at noon at the agency’s conference room in Stateline. Bring lunch, dessert and beverages will be provided. The event is free.

• Five Pleasant Valley wineries (Auriga, Holly’s Hill, Miraflores, Narrow Gate, Sierra Vista) will host Rocks & Rhones on May 24-25 from 11am-4pm. Tickets are $30 before May 1, $35 after that or $40 at the door. For more info, go online.

This building fronting Highway 50 and Harrison Avenue in Al Tahoe was owned by Frank Globin from the 1920s. It included a gas station, grocery store, bar and restaurant, and a U.S. Post Office.

A fire in the spring of 1956 destroyed most of the building, but surviving today is its historic south end with the classic stone chimney, steep roof, and a basement (unique in Tahoe).

Barton Health has $25,000 to give out in grants to organizations that help the underserved populations and have a lasting impact on the community’s well-being.

Barton Health will fund programs that address South Lake Tahoe community’s most pressing health needs — substance abuse, access to healthcare and mental health.

The objective is to fund projects that serve a large portion of the South Shore community. In past grant cycles, between five and ten organizations were selected.

The deadline to apply is June 27. Grantees will be notified in September and grants will be awarded at the National Philanthropy Day celebration on Nov. 7.

Funding for Barton Health Grants is provided by Barton Health through donations from the Barton Foundation.

• Truckee High School baseball coach Mike Ellis’ memorial service is April 14 at 2pm at the Assumption Catholic Church, 10930 Alder Drive, Truckee. A tribute at FiftyFifty Brewing Co. in Truckee will follow. Ellis died last weekend of an apparent heart attack. He was 43.

• Marcus Ashley Fine Art Gallery in South Lake Tahoe presents “Hats Off to Dr. Seuss” from May 17-June 22 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s second book “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins”. Six people are vying for the seat that represents Lake Tahoe and goes to Pollock Pines. Current supervisor, Norma Santiago, is being termed out.

• The 30th anniversary of the movie “Hot Dog” will be celebrated at Squaw Valley on April 26. Doors open at 5:30pm, a Q&A with 10 original cast members is at 6:30pm and the film starts at 7:30pm. Tickets are $25 and are available online.

• Tahoe Regional Young Professionals is having a retirement planning workshop on April 16 from 5:30-6:30pm at New York Life Insurance, 408 Doria Court, Round Hill. It’s free to members and $5 for others.

• More than 140 runners braved the unpredictable weather March 29 for the inaugural Sugarloaf Stampede benefiting the Sugarloaf Station Foundation – a nonprofit organization that grants partial scholarships to students who attend the Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp during the summer. El Dorado County Office of Education organized the fundraiser, which raised more $17,000 for the foundation.

The westbound Interstate 80 Gold Run Safety Roadside Rest Area will be closed today from 8am-8pm.

The eastbound rest area will remain open.

The closure is necessary so a contractor can do utility connection work and Caltrans crews can do routine maintenance.
