The El Dorado County District 5 supervisor candidates will face off May 6 from 5:30-7:30pm.

The forum is sponsored by Tahoe Regional Young Professionals and Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce.

The event is at the CCC office in Meyers, 1949 Apache Ave.

• South Lake Tahoe is hosting a workshop May 17 at 5:30pm at Lake Tahoe Airport to discuss how the plastic bag ban ordinance is affecting businesses.

• Washoe County residents are invited to a behind-the-scenes look at the sheriff’s office’s Forensic Science Division on April 24 from 8:30am-4pm at 911 Parr Blvd., Reno.

• World Book Night is April 23. Throughout the day, volunteer book lovers will be in various locations in El Dorado County giving away hundreds of books.

• There will be an informational workshop April 22 at 3pm in Truckee about Measure V – the half cent sales tax initiative. The meeting is at town hall.

• This Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care video is of the newest cub making a contented sound called chortling.

The 2nd annual Made in Tahoe Festival returns to Squaw Valley May 24-25.

It showcases local businesses, artisans, product designers, nonprofits and performers all hailing from the Tahoe region. Food will also be available.

New this year will be live performances by local artists including Tahoe Flow Arts, a studio that specializes in aerial arts, dance and yoga.

Festivities will be from 11am-7pm.

In the 1860s, Glenbrook was the smoky and cluttered site of A.W. Pray’s lumber and shingles mills.

Lake Tahoe was a primary lumber source for burgeoning Virginia City.

The steamers Tahoe and Nevada would dock together at the pier fronting the Glenbrook Inn.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum will operate and offer rides aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway’s McKeen motor car No. 22 on May 10 from 10am-4pm.

The car is a National Historic Landmark.

The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car remaining.

Train fares are $8 for those 12 and older; $4 museum members and children 4-11; free for children 3 or younger.

• South Lake Tahoe is paring down the code books to make them less confusing to business owners. People may get involved in how to make the city more business friendly at a meeting May 7 from 5:30-7pm at Lake Tahoe Airport.

• Northstar Travel Media, Travel Weekly’s parent, has acquired Mountain Travel Symposium, an annual conference that focuses on mountain regions worldwide and changing trends in marketing, distribution and technology.

• Romantic Adventures has closed shop in South Lake Tahoe and moved to MontBleu.

• Disabled Sports USA Far West has bestowed its annual citizen of the year award on Andy Wirth, president and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings.

• The historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad season runs May 24 through Oct. 19, with a special train running Mother’s Day.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency in its role as the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization has awarded more than $550,000 in grants to Lake Tahoe organizations for community-based planning projects aimed at sustainability and improved mobility options around the lake.

The On Our Way Community Grant Program is a new program that is designed to help community organizations and local governments identify transportation and other improvements that improve walking and biking, create safer streets, and support economic vitality.

The Douglas County Public Library is upgrading its public computers.

The new system will be faster and include updated software programs.

The Minden Library will be closed April 30 and May 1 for the equipment installation. The Zephyr Cove Library will be open on April 30, but public computers will not be available.

• It’s finally coming down – the burned out house of South Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas. The Pioneer Trail structure was a total loss in September 2012 when a fire swept through. It has been a charred remembrance since then. Excavation is expected soon.

• Lake Tahoe residential white pages listings provided by AT&T have been removed from future YP Real Yellow Pages and YP Real White Pages directories. Other areas affected include Amador-Placerville, Auburn, Orange County, San Jose, Campbell and Kings-Tulare.
