• South Lake Tahoe is asking residents to take a Community Wildfire Protection Plan survey.

• Seventy-two Vail Resorts employees helped clean Highway 267 last week.

• Truckee has launched a second survey to collect input from the community on the Truckee Trails and Bikeways Master Plan Update. The survey will run through May 12.

• Debbie Brown is going to open a brewery-restaurant where the Swiss Chalet restaurant used to be in South Lake Tahoe.

• In April, Truckee police officers issued 22 written warnings for cell phone violations and 15 citations for cell phone violations. Of those that were warned or cited, 68 percent reported a Truckee address. Also in April, officers investigated 11 traffic accidents; none involved distracted driving.

Running: It’s Your Journey is the topic of Caroline and Alan Barichievich’s May 20 lecture.

The physical therapists with Barton Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine will talk from 6-7pm at Lake Tahoe Community College’s board room.

The free talk is for people who run a 5K or more than 100 miles. There will be a review of proper gear and attire, tips to improve running performance, and injury prevention and treatment.

• The Tahoe Tallac Association has changed its name to Valhalla Tahoe. Information about this year’s festival is online.

• Scott Valentine, Earth science instructor at Lake Tahoe Community College, will talk June 3 at 6pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library about geology in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

• A professional shredding company will be at St. Theresa School (1081 Lyons Ave., South Lake Tahoe) on May 10 from 10am-1pm. It is free, but donations are accepted.

• South Lake Tahoe is having a free summer kickoff party June 7 from 10am-2pm at the rec center on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

• More than 50 pounds of prescription medications were collected last month at the South Lake Tahoe prescription drug take back day.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is accepting comments on the environmental assessment for a proposal that would require proper storage of food and refuse at developed recreation sites in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Comments will be accepted through May.

• Douglas County planning commissioners at their May 13 meeting will consider allowing Jon and David Park, owners of what is now called Park Tahoe Casino in Stateline, to use 2,730-square-feet of commercial floor area for an outdoor food service patio next to an existing restaurant. The 1pm meeting is at 1616 Eighth St., Minden.

• The Jon Paul Gallery in South Lake Tahoe is closing at the end of May.

• Chuck Malone of Lake Valley Fire Protection District has been promoted to captain.

• The Nevada Division of Forestry is hosting Junk the Junipers from 8am-1pm May 10 at its Eastlake Office in Washoe Valley. Residents of local communities are encouraged to bring their junipers, pines, rabbitbrush, sagebrush and other woody vegetation to be chipped for free. Participants will receive a coupon from Moana Nursery for 30 percent off a “good plant choice,” Moana-grown replacement shrub.

• Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is having a session about the differences between employees and independent contractors, as well as how misclassification may spell trouble. The meeting is May 8 from 8-9am the chamber’s Stateline office. Cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members.

• Barton Auxiliary is hosting a blood drive June 2 from noon-6pm at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel in South Lake Tahoe.

• Kyle Mohagen will be the next principal of Kings Beach Elementary School.

• Tahoe Truckee Unified School District Superintendent Rob Leri received the public servant of the year award at the North Lake Tahoe 60th annual Community Awards Dinner.

• Tahoe Donner’s 18-hole championship golf course will be open to the public seven days a week for the season starting May 16.

• Championship Course and the Mountain Course at Incline Village are set to open May 9. This will be the earliest for the Mountain Course to open and the first time both courses have opened on the same day.

The LegiSchool Project is seeking entries from high school students for the annual photo contest California Through My Eyes.

How do you envision California? Farms or mountains? People or prairies? High rise buildings or wide open spaces? All California high school students are invited to capture an image that represents California. The photo can be of a person, place or thing.

In addition to the photo, students need to include an essay up to 150 words explaining why the photo represents California.

Entries must be postmarked by May 9.

The LegiSchool Project is a civic education collaboration between California State University, Sacramento and the State Legislature, administered by the Center for California Studies.

Historian, educator, lifelong Sierra Nevada resident and author Gary Noy comes to Lake Tahoe Community College on May 9 at 7pm.

He’ll read selections from his latest book “Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots and Rogues”, answer audience questions, and sign copies of his books. The talk will be in the board room.
