Barton Health is putting on two wellness lectures in June.

The first is titled The Healthier You – 10 Steps to Better Living. Kenneth Spielvogel, a doctor with Barton Women’s Health, will talk June 4 from 6-7pm at Lake Tahoe Community College’s board room.

On June 17 from 6-7pm Kyle Swanson, a doctor with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will talk about preventing shoulder injuries.

This talk is also at the LTCC board room in South Lake Tahoe.

• South Tahoe Public Utility District is having a workshop regarding sewer and water rates on May 15 from 6-8pm at the district office on Meadow Crest Drive.

• Zach Hymanson has been appointed associate director to UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center. He replaces John Reuter, who served in this position since the inception of TERC in 2004.

One item is how the rafting season is expected to be short and therefore TCPUD staff is likely going to have to clean up the river area that commercial operators usually do. Another item involves replacing the Kilner Park tennis courts.

A May 29 meeting about the Lake Tahoe Airport Master Plan will include an update on the process, additional details on specific aspects of the plan, and will address questions from attendees.

The meeting is at 5:30pm at the airport in South Lake Tahoe.

The Grove at Camp Richardson

Until the 1930s, “The Grove” on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore consisted of a pier, dance hall, saloon, tents, cabins and other structures.

Some imported from various other locations.

Part of The Grove location included what is today’s privately-owned Camp Richardson Marina, adjacent to the U.S. Forest Service-owned Camp Richardson Resort.

This view (#5) from the Camp Richardson Marina pier essentially shows the shoreline of what was The Grove from the pier into Jameson Beach. The Grove’s old pier was near the dock seen at left.

Local historian Dave Wakeman observes that the tallest trees viewed on the south shoreline are between Camp Richardson and Kiva Beach because early landowner Lucky Baldwin would not allow tree harvesting on his property.

Nevada saw a 39 percent jump in motorcycle fatalities from 2012 to 2013. Fifty-three people died last year.

May is Motorcycle Safety Month in Nevada.

Nevada crash data shows the most common factors involved in fatal crashes are speed, rider inexperience and alcohol. Those most often involved in a crash are riders younger than 25 and older than 50.

Officials say: always wear a DOT-compliant helmet, eye protection, gloves, riding jacket and sturdy shoes or boots. Be seen by wearing high-visibility riding gear, ride within the speed limit and stay out of the blind spots of cars and trucks.

Motorcyclists may also take part in safe rider education programs. Class schedules, locations and fees may be found online.

Rebecca Phillipsen with Barton Home Health and Hospice will talk about how to deal with feelings of loss and understanding grief on May 12 from 1-3pm.

People will be taught how to recognize and heal feelings that may be related to grief. This class is designed for people age 60 or older or caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older.

Classes and materials are free.
