The Wings of Freedom Tour honoring WWII veterans, including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Nine O Nine WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator Witchcraft WWII Heavy Bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter, will arrive at Minden-Tahoe Airport at noon on June 2 and will be on display until noon June 4.

Ground tours and display hours are noo-5pm June 2; 9am-5pm June 3; and from 9am-noon June 4.

For an up-close view and tour through the aircraft the cost is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12.

Highway 50 is scheduled to be closed in both directions from El Dorado Hills Boulevard/Latrobe Road to Bass Lake Road on May 18 for rock blasting work.

The closure is scheduled from 6-8am Sunday. In addition, motorists should expect the Latrobe Road/El Dorado Hills Boulevard eastbound on-ramp to Highway 50 and Bass Lake Road westbound on-ramp to Highway 50 closed from midnight to 8am Sunday.

During the closure, traffic will be routed onto Serrano Parkway. Motorists traveling east from El Dorado Hills will detour onto El Dorado Hills Boulevard to Serrano Parkway to Bass Lake Road. Motorists traveling west from Cameron Park will take Bass Lake Road to Serrano Parkway to El Dorado Hills Boulevard.

The work is part of a $57 million El Dorado County project to build a new Highway 50 interchange at Silva Valley Parkway.

Lake Tahoe Community College’s Art Department’s annual Student Art Exhibition, showcasing up-and-coming South Lake Tahoe artists who have enrolled in art classes during the last academic year, is May 18-June 14.

The opening reception is May 18 from 2-5pm with music, refreshments, and the awards ceremony at 3:30pm in the main building on campus.

Megan Berner is the juror for the exhibition. Berner is a UNR Art Department photography faculty member, as well as a photography, video, and installation artist.

The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Sierra Club’s Paint Tahoe Blue fundraiser is June 15.

It is a live plein air event and auction to raise funds to protect Lake Tahoe. Up to 20 artists will be painting.

The event is from 4-8pm at Sand Harbor in Incline Village. Auction of the artists’ work will be at 7pm.

The event is free, though parking is $10. Park in the group picnic area on right just after entering.

• Greg Bergner recently received the Carthage Alumni Beacon Award. Carthage College recognized Bergner for his service as a physician, particularly to Medi-Cal patients, and for providing science education to students at Bijou Community School in an after-school program.

Linda Chorney, Grammy nominee and author, will give a talk — for adults — on June 17 at 6pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Chorney made history as the first independent artist without a label, publicist, or manager to be nominated for a Grammy in a category of legends, like Robert Plant, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. The gatekeepers of the industry were not happy, and did what they could to undermine her nomination and career.

Chorney fights back with a delicious sense of humor.

The evening will include music, reading, and storytelling.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in the Simpson’s Jewelry Store burglary.

The South Lake Tahoe shop had windows smashed and jewels stolen by four masked men April 29.

The suspects were driving a stolen Ford pickup that has since been recovered in the area.

El Dorado County led the state in 2013 with an estimated 79 percent of families reading to their children on a daily basis, according to Children Now.

El Dorado County Library reaches nearly one in six children, ages birth through 5 annually, offering early literacy programs at all six branches, including outreach to preschools and child care programs throughout the county.

There will be an early literacy celebration May 22 at 10am at the Placerville Library, 345 Fair Lane.

Immediately following the recognition, people may participate in Mother Goose on the Loose story time with our families and “stay and play” at the mobile child development center.

David Antonucci will speak on “Fairest Picture – Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe” to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on May 21.
