He will be giving a talk Jan. 5 as part of the Ski Run speaker series.

Doors open at 6:30pm upstairs at Blue Angel Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, with the show at 7:30pm. Tickets are $20, $10 for children under 13. Cash only. All proceeds will support the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association.

·      The reason for the Dec. 21 NV Energy outage that cut power to thousands on the South Shore and in the Carson Valley was because a tree fell onto a line while a private contractor was doing work.

·      South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts provided $15,000 this holiday season to three community organizations – $5,000 each to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Christmas Cheer, and Live Violence Free.

It’s time to turn that Christmas tree into mulch.

South Tahoe Refuse will pick up trees with zero decorations on them on customers’ regular trash pick up days between now and Jan. 8.

Trees cannot be taller than 6 feet. If they are, cut them down to size.

Flocked trees cannot be recycled.

After the holiday break, the magnet school in Meyers will begin taking names for the gall ’18 line-up of kindergartners. 

Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School needs parents of a child who will turn 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2018, to fill out a kindergarten enrollment request form.

If the child turns 5 after Sept. 1, the transitional kinder program at Tahoe Valley School is an option.

Enrollment at LTESMS is based on a lottery. Forms are due March 23.

·      Douglas County commissioners on Dec. 21 unanimously agreed to increase South Tahoe Refuse rates by 6.81 percent starting Jan. 1.

·      The Science of Cocktails is coming to the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village on Feb. 2 from 5:30-7:30pm. There will be more than 10 cocktail stations that double as learning hubs with unique activities and demonstrations for adults. Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s annual HR Employment Law Workshop is designed to provide attendees with the latest business laws such as the new minimum wage requirements in California, cannabis in the workplace, and other employment laws in store for 2018.

This workshop will be facilitated by MOBO Law.

It will be Jan. 17 from noon-1:30pm at the chamber’s Stateline office.

Cost is $10 for members, $20 for others.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless will open the warm room on Christmas Eve at 7pm at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church in South Lake Tahoe.

The Presbyterian Church is partnering with the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless to provide a safe and warm place for homeless individuals Christmas week.

From Jan. 1-April 1, the warm room is expected to operate at was Unity Church. That property is owned by the city of South Lake Tahoe. The lease is still being negotiated.
