• The two major Las Vegas newspapers are reporting seeing Don Marrandino hanging back in Southern Nevada hanging out the Hard Rock Hotel. He used to run Harrah’s Lake Tahoe and Harveys. Local rumor is that he will take over the former Horizon that is being redeveloped into a Hard Rock themed hotel.

Construction work on Highway 89 on the West Shore is switching to around-the-clock work this week.
The $41 million project from Tahoma to Tahoe City includes drainage treatment facilities for stormwater runoff, curb and gutter, shoulder widening and new pavement throughout the 9-mile project limits.
The contractor is working on rebuilding the highway in 3-mile stretches, with the first phase from Wilson Avenue in Tahoma to Cherry Street in Homewood to be completed this construction season. The second phase is scheduled to be built in 2015 and the project will be completed in 2016.
Road and Highway Builders will be working around the clock this week until noon Friday in the McKinney Creek area and will also be working daytime from 6am-6pm Monday through Thursday and until noon Friday in Tahoma.
In addition, Southwest Gas’ contractor continues work on the north end of the project limits to relocate and replace gas lines that are in conflict with Caltrans’ project. Gas work this week is overnight from 6pm-noon through Friday from Middle Sequoia Avenue to Cathedral Drive. The gas work will go up to Granlibakken Road.
Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays at each one-way traffic control stop, with total delays not to exceed 20 minutes. No work is allowed between noon Friday and 10pm Sunday.
The second annual Tahoe Treasures Tour will feature some of Incline Village’s loveliest homes, gardens, and art collections.
The July 12 event is from 11am-4pm.
The event is sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Tahoe Nevada branch. Tea and tapas will be served and ticket sales will fund the AAUW scholarship program. Tickets are $35.

• The Valhalla festival on the South Shore will not be producing “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” this summer, but instead will be putting on “The Servant of Two Masters” on July 10-13 and July 17-20 at the Boathouse Theater.
• Truckee’s Coldstream Specific Plan will be before the Planning Commission June 17 at 6pm at the town hall.

• Get acquainted with a variety of bugs from around the world with officials from the UC Davis’ Bohart Museum of Entomology. They will be at the South Lake Tahoe Library on July 18 at 2pm. The event is free at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.
Virginia City offers one of the region’s longest firework displays on July 4.
Echoing off Mt. Davidson for nearly 30 minutes, it’s possible to feel the boom in your bones. The fireworks soar high above the town and into Six Mile Canyon, making them visible from nearly anywhere in town.
The Virginia City Fourth of July Celebration also includes a parade, a raffle and auction, the Comstock Cowboys Second Amendment Concert, an Old West shoot-out, and food and beverage vendors.

Barney’s in 1961.
Barney’s Casino opened at Stateline in spring 1961. It was operated by majority owners Barney O’Malia and Richard Chartrand.

Chartrand also had an early interest in what years later became John’s Tahoe Nugget at Stateline, which was locally popular for featuring seafood and prime rib. Chartrand died in an unsolved car bombing at Skyland in 1968. John’s Tahoe Nugget ultimately closed at the end of 1990.
Totally remodeled and under new ownership, today that building just north of the Douglas County Administrative Center houses restaurants, a UPS Store, and professional business offices.
A casino no longer exists at the site.
Barney’s became Bill’s Casino in 1987 under new ownership by Harrah’s Entertainment. The second floor contained a McDonald’s Restaurant, then a bit of a rarity for the fast food restaurant to be inside a casino.

Bill’s closed in January 2010, however, and the property was sold.
After long and extensive remodeling, the building today houses multiple businesses.

South Lake Tahoe is seeking comments for the Tahoe Valley Area Plan’s notice of preparation for the environmental documents.
The city and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will prepare an environmental impact report and and environmental impact statement for the Tahoe Valley Area Plan.
