The building came down June 14.

McP’s Pub no longer exists in South Lake Tahoe — at least for now.

Pete Joseph’s place closed for business last month in anticipation of the building being razed. This took place on June 14.

Next up will be the grand opening this summer of the much larger McP’s at the corner of Highway 50 and Stateline Avenue. It is going to be a restaurant, bar and nightclub on the north end of the Chateau project in the round building.

Lake Tahoe residents who would like to help people learn about the region’s environmental assets and challenges are needed to serve as volunteer docents at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village and the Eriksson Education Center in Tahoe City.

Docent training will take place June 17, 19, and 21. Attendance at all three training sessions is strongly recommended.

A three-day training is in all things Tahoe: history, geology, ecology, and an introduction to the research being conducted at the lake.

No science experience is necessary.

The Douglas County Public Library is hosting a special family storytime on June 18 at 10:30am under the canopy at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Youth Services Librarian Kathy E. will tell a story based on the book “No Problem” by Eileen Browne. Afterward children of all ages will fold their own paper airplane. They will test how far it goes, discover how long it stays in the air, and aim their plane through a target.

Local fire agencies are hosting a Wildfire Safety Expo on June 21 from noon to 3pm at the TJ Maxx parking lot in South Lake Tahoe.

The event will include information on creating a home evacuation plan, preparing for fire, creating defensible space around your property and more.

The Wildfire Safety Expo will provide fun for the entire family and special appearances by Smokey Bear and Lake Tahoe Humane Society’s Hopeful Henry will be in attendance.

Participating agencies include: South Lake Tahoe Fire Department, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, CalFire, California Tahoe Conservancy, Lake Tahoe Master Gardeners, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, American Red Cross, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department, California Conservation Corps, Lake Tahoe Humane Society, and South Tahoe Public Utility District.

Tahoe Derby Dames is having a pancake breakfast fundraiser on June 29 from 8am-noon.

It is a pancake breakfast is at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe.

The funds raised will support the South Shore roller derby team’s 2014 season. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for kids.

• South Lake Tahoe author Todd Borg will discuss his 12th book of the Owen McKenna mystery series on July 30 at 6:30pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library, 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. The book will be for sale and he will sign copies.

• The natives and adapted natives workshop will cover the importance of using natives and adapted natives while landscaping and what specific plants do best in Tahoe’s climate. The free classes are from 5:30-6:30pm on July 21 at Lake Tahoe Community College Demonstration Garden in South Lake Tahoe and July 22 at the TERC Tahoe City Field Station.

• Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s July 1 Tech Tuesday is Constant Contact. The 5-7pm class at the chamber’s office in Stateline is free for members, $15 for non-members.

• Why do bad things seem to linger in our minds longer than the good things? Recent work suggests that negative thoughts are cognitively “stickier” than positive ones. The third draft of the Meyers Area Plan is available online.

There will be a meeting about it June 26 from 6-8pm at the California Conservation Corps in Meyers.

El Dorado County is evaluating the establishment of a Community Services District elected by Meyers residents, which would review proposed projects, initiate future revisions to the plan, and direct some funding for local improvement projects. This Community Services District would fulfill the role of the Meyers Advisory Council described in the plan.

The county and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency are working to complete an assessment of the environmental effects of the revised plan. That assessment is expected to be completed within the next couple weeks at which time the environmental documentation will be circulated for a 30-day comment period.

Several troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, as well as other employees for the Department of Public Safety, will be volunteering their time to raise money for Special Olympics Nevada and California on June 14 in the Hard Rock Café inside Harveys.

Troopers will serve as volunteer waiters and waitresses as they assist the restaurant staff that day while they work for “special tips.” Each volunteer will leave an envelope with each table for those wishing to make a donation. These tips are in addition to the regular server’s gratuity.

All of the extra tips will stay in Northern Nevada and Northern California to pay for the sports training and competition activities for athletes enrolled in Special Olympics Nevada/California programs.

Additionally, law enforcement officers and firefighters will be competing in a chicken wing eating contest about 4pm that same day.
