Tahoe City Public Utility District’s board is having public workshop July 1 about water and sewer rates.

TCPUD is preparing an update to its 2008-09 Water and Sewer Rate Analysis. HDR Engineering will be doing the analysis.

TCPUD will be considering its rate structure for 2015-20.

“We believe that due to the significant rate increases we undertook during the last five years, the next five year plan should be very reasonable,” officials said in a statement.

The meeting will be at 4pm at the district office.

• On June 24, the Lake Tahoe Community College board of trustees is expected to vote on a new mascot; it has been the kokanee and is proposed to be a coyote. The colors of green and white may be expanded to include blue.

• Throughout June and July, adults and children with Medi-Cal will be able to see a dentist in South Lake Tahoe. Alison Ledgerwood will give a lecture on positive psychology at the Tahoe Environmental Center on July 17.

She will address: Why do bad things seem to stick in our minds so much longer than the good things? Is there anything we can do about it?

Ledgerwood joined the Department of Psychology at UC Davis in 2008, after receiving her doctorate in social psychology from New York University. Her research and teaching focuses on understanding how people think and behave in social situations, and how to harness that knowledge to improve the social world in which we all live.

Aktion Club will be having a rummage sale June 21 from 8am-2pm at TJ Maxx parking lot in South Lake Tahoe.

Aktion Club is a community service group sponsored by Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra for adults with disabilities.

Members raise money to support various projects such as Project 44 for local foster children and, the Eliminate Project which helps eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus in third world countries as well as their annual leadership convention.

• League to Save Lake Tahoe’s summer kickoff party is June 27 from 5-8pm at 2608 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

• California Public Utilities Commission has awarded the Tahoe Prosperity Center a California Advanced Services Fund grant. The $167,000 grant is for a two-year project focused on promoting the expansion of broadband services in unserved and underserved areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

• Mark Estee, owner of Campo in Reno and Burger Me in Truckee, will be on Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games.” Guy Fieri and Estee met several years ago when Burger Me Truckee was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”. Estee’s episode will air at 8pm June 22.

South Lake Tahoe’s STAR Camp– South Tahoe Adventure Recreation — starts this week.

The mission is to provide an active, healthy, and safe environment for youth to learn and play.

This is for ages 6-16.

This program is designed for youth and teens to explore Lake Tahoe, discover the possibilities, and create memories in a fun and safe environment. Independent teen activities will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer.

STAR Camp offers 10 weeks of 10 different themes including; outdoor fun and adventure, love my neighbor, fitness challenge, go green and bike, act like a star, cowboys and angels, NASA and science, career week, be the change, and spirit week.

The Golden Touch: Science Magic program is part of Douglas County Library’s summer program.

This special reading program storytime will be at Mormon Station State Historic Park on June 25 at 10:30am.

Beth Hyland and Christopher Turbeville will retell the myth of King Midas and his Golden Touch. Afterward children will perform experiments that include turning metal into “gold.” Everyone will take home a golden coin.

Tahoe Water Suppliers Association has awarded $500 Future of Water scholarships to four area high school graduates.

The scholarships are available to a student working toward his or her first undergraduate degree and who is enrolled in a program related to water resources, environmental science or the sciences.

The students are selected by the following criteria: an essay on “Source Water Protection – Why It Matters”, academic performance including the cumulative grade point average, relevance of the student’s curriculum to science and leadership in extracurricular activities.
