“Let’s have a conversation” is being initiated by South Lake Tahoe Mayor Wendy David.

Her goal is to host monthly informal gatherings that anyone may join. Joining her will either be another council member or someone relevant to a topic going on in town.

For the first conversation, David has invited Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis to join her Jan. 24 from 9-10am at Peet’s Coffee inside Raley’s at the Y.

·      On Jan. 17, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe will honor 11 young women for their academic and community achievements. These recipients are chosen by the staff at their respective schools. From South Tahoe High school recipients are Jessie Brown, Lulu Gutierrez, Celeste Holmes, Shelby Lyon, Evelyn Munguia Reyes, and Theresa Sandborn. From Whittell High School recipients are Tatum Bunnett, Madison Evans, Madison Peterson, Makena Snipes, and Gabriela Trachsel.

·      PATH – Partners Against the Trafficking of Humans, Tahoe Youth & Family Services, and Live Violence Free are hosting the short movie “Human Trafficking – A Look Beneath the Surface” on Jan. 30. Afterward there will be a panel discussion about trafficking in El Dorado County. The event will be at the Duke Theatre at Lake Tahoe Community starting at 6:30pm. A $5 donation benefits PATH.

·      Holocaust survivor and South Lake Tahoe resident Leon Malmed on Feb. 21 will give a presentation about his life in hiding between 1940-45 in Nazi occupied France. The free talk will start at 6pm at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

·      SnowGlobe will be planting 200 sugar pins in the Emerald Fire area in the spring through the Sugar Pine Foundation and Waste Free Earth.

·      The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport Ranger District remains closed to over-snow vehicles due to lack of snow. Snow levels must meet the minimum of 24 inches in order to open the area.

·       At the annual USTA Northern California awards banquet in February the most outstanding senior tournament will be awarded to Tahoe Donner 7th annual Senior Tournament and the most outstanding NTRP tournament will go to Tahoe Donner Ninth annual NTRP Tournament. Adult tournament director of the year is Ian Mindell of Truckee.

·      Diane Dealey Neill, secretary of the Amador El Dorado Forest Forum and the executive director of Forestry Educators Incorporated, will be the guest speaker at the El Dorado County State of Jefferson meeting Jan. 9 at the American Legion Hall, 4561 Greenstone Road, Placerville. TRPA’s Regional Plan Implementation Committee will have a public hearing on the plan Jan. 24 at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach. TRPA’s Governing Board will consider adoption of the Meyers Area Plan at the Feb. 28 meeting in Stateline.
