The State of Jefferson County Committees of El Dorado, Nevada and Placer’s Assembly of Patriots will be Feb. 11 at the American Legion Hall in Placerville.

Doors open at 2pm, the event begins at 3pm with guest speaker Mark Baird of Siskiyou County. Kicking off the event will be Terry Rapoza, co-host of Jefferson State of Mine radio show,on KNCR radio in Shasta County.

Admission is free and all ages are encouraged to attend.

Jefferson merchandise, information, snacks and beverages will be available.

·      Human resources expert Laura Moriarty will be conducting a workshop Feb. 21 about the steps people can take to prevent sexual harassment, retaliation, and bullying in the workplace. ·      Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Jacob Pipho, from Carson City, placed first in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. He competed against student winners from several other states and will receive $1,000 for his poster “The Element of Surprise.”

The South Lake Tahoe Community Hub officially opens Feb. 1 at the local library.

Community Hubs are teams of parenting, literacy and health specialists located throughout El Dorado County who assist families with the everyday challenges of raising children and connect them to community resources. Hubs offer groups, activities, and programs for families with children up to age 18, focused on building resiliency through collaborative, community-based prevention and early intervention services.

The Hub will host a brief ceremony including a proclamation by El Dorado County Supervisor Sue Novasel, introduction to the Community Hub team members followed by a story time.

This free event is at 10:30am and open to all. The library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

·      Lake Tahoe Unified School District is warning people that an individual or company is making phone calls and going to homes in the area offering tutoring services. They are telling people that their child’s school sent them and they are asking for credit card numbers or cash. These services are not sanctioned or sponsored by LTUSD or any of the district’s schools. The district does not share any student information with third parties unless required by law.

·      Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business Expo is March 30, 4:30-8:30pm at Harveys in Stateline. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for others in advance; $20 at the door.

·      Ed Zschau, a former congressman and Silicon Valley CEO, will discuss why the Northern Nevada area is poised to become the most vibrant high-tech enterprise center in the United States, and how education, entrepreneurship, and economic development initiatives are making that vision possible. The free event is Feb. 21 from 11:45am-12:45pm at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Science in Incline Village.

·      Ismeal Resendiz-Moreno, 44, of Incline Village, has been booked on a charge of murder as part of the ongoing investigation of a homicide that occurred Tuesday morning inside a residence in Incline Village. The victim’s name still has not been released.

·      Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce raised $2,550 for Bread & Broth at the charity mixer this month.

·      The 2018 Spartan World Championship returns to Lake Tahoe on Sept. 29-30, drawing some of the world’s best endurance athletes to the rugged mountains of Squaw Valley. The seventh annual event is the culmination of Spartan’s 2018 Global Championship Series, which will see competitors battling obstacles on five continents for the largest cash purse in obstacle racing history.

·      There’s Magic in the Air is the theme of the El Dorado County Fair that will run June 14-17 in Placerville.

·      South Tahoe Brewing Co. is having a fundraiser for Heavenly’s avalanche dog program on Feb. 9 from 6-10pm.

El Dorado County has launched of a website focused on cannabis issues.

It includes information about personal and commercial guidelines, the county’s regulatory history of cannabis, state and county policies about cannabis, code enforcement process, frequently asked questions and answers, and more.

The ad hoc Cannabis Committee is scheduled to meet Jan. 31 from 3-5pm at the county Planning Commission conference room, 2850 Fairlane Court, Building C, Placerville.

·      Phish will be at Harveys on July 17-18, 6:30pm. They are general admission shows with unassigned bleacher seating available.

·      Residents in the Tahoe Keys area of South Lake Tahoe along Catalina Street will be without power on Jan. 24 from 9am-4pm while Liberty Utilities replaces a transformer.

·      El Dorado County Supervisor Brian Veerkamp is having a town hall meeting Jan. 31 from 6:30-8pm in the Board of Supervisors room in Placerville.

The classes, offered in partnership with Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, run 6-8pm every Tuesday, Feb. 6-March 27 at Bartley Ranch Regional Park in Reno.

·      President Trump signed legislation introduced by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Garden Valley, designating a mountain in the John Muir Wilderness of the Sierra National Forest as Sky Point. The bill honors Marine Staff Sgt. Sky Mote of El Dorado, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 10, 2012. 

·      South Lake Tahoe city councilmembers on Jan. 23 are expected to vote themselves as well as the elected city treasurer a 5 percent raise. This would bring each of their monthly stipends to $1,042.97.

·      State Sen. Ted Gaines, R-El Dorado, introduced Senate Bill 911, legislation that ensures killers of police dogs are prosecuted as felons.

·      Friends of the Douglas County Public Library’s annual membership meeting and reception is Jan. 27 from 11am-1pm. The Minden Library is located at 1625 Library Lane. 

·      The lack of snow is affecting business at Zephyr Cove Lodge. The restaurant is only open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
