• Lake Tahoe Unified School District is working on its career technical education (CTE) programs and is asking people to take this survey.

• Heavenly Mountain Resort took over the lease of what was Cecil’s Market to expand Heavenly Sports. “To provide a smoother experience for guests, Heavenly Sports is relocating the retail portion of its store to that space. The rental portion of Heavenly Sports will remain in its current location and will also aim to provide a more seamless transition from Heavenly’s Ski and Ride School through the rental process,” Sally Gunter, Heavenly spokeswoman, told Lake Tahoe News.

• Nearly 300 Lake Tahoe Unified School District students earned a free pass this season to Sierra-at-Tahoe for having had perfect grades last school year.

• Soup Tahoe is opening Nov. 4 on Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe. It will be seasonal; operating where SUP Tahoe is. There will be and “O” added to the sign for winter.

• William Hill, the world’s leading sports betting company, will operate the sportsbook at Hard Rock Hotel Lake Tahoe.

• Kingsbury Grade will temporarily reopen to through traffic the weekend of Sept. 27 for the Genoa Candy Dance.

• South Lake Tahoe City Council candidate Austin Sass  had political signs stolen from at least three locations the night of Sept. 24. He is offering a $500 reward for anyone who can lend information that will result in the prosecution of whomever stole the signs.

• The Street Vibrations motorcycle rally is now through Sept. 28. The primary events will be located in Reno and Sparks, but other events are scheduled in Carson City, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe.

• The fast-paced excitement of skicross and snowboardcross will come to Squaw Valley March 4-8 with the resort hosting an Audi FIS Skicross World Cup and FIS Snowboard World Cup. This will be the first time the International Ski Federation has brought a World Cup event to Squaw Valley since the FIS Alpine World Cup in 1969.

• A free and anonymous disposal site for expired and unused drugs will be in the Safeway parking lot at 1020 Johnson Blvd., South Lake Tahoe on Sept. 27 from 10am-2pm.

The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride honors emergency medical services personnel by organizing and implementing long distance cycling events that memorialize and celebrate the lives of those who serve, who have become sick or injured while performing their duties, and those who have died in the line of duty.

On Sept. 24 while cycling from South Lake Tahoe to Placerville, members of this year’s ride stopped at Lake Valley Fire Protection District Station 7 in Meyers to honor fallen firefighter-paramedic Mitch Underhill.

Members of the bike ride honored 88 members of the EMS community who have been lost by the ringing of the “last alarm” bell after their names were spoken. After the ceremony, the cyclists were escorted by Lake Valley fire engines to the base of Old Meyers Grade to continue on with their ride.

• The Tahoe Area Sierra Club and Aspen Hollow will be celebrating autumn with the annual Fall Garden Party on Oct. 1 from 4:30-7pm. Aspen Hollow is located at 541 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe. Cost is $10.

• Incline Village Community Hospital has been added to Washoe County Sheriff’s Office prescription drug roundup on Sept. 27 from 10am-2pm.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce and South Lake Tahoe are offering a selling skills workshop for business owners on Oct. 8 from noon-4pm.

Workshop participants will be taught the fundamentals and processes of selling to better understand themselves and the customer and to manage the sales process more effectively. Topics include defining your ideal client, perfecting your pitch, articulating the why of your product, the sales process and closing questions. This interactive workshop is ideal for business owners or managers who want to up their sales game in an authentic way while still achieving results.

BloodSource is having a blood drive in South Lake Tahoe on Oct. 6 form noon-6pm.

Walk-ins are welcome.

Blood drive participants will receive a parking validation for Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel at the blood drive check in.

Donating blood takes about an hour. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be 17 years old (16 year olds need a signed BloodSource parental consent form) and be generally healthy. There is no upper age limit for blood donations. Donors must bring a photo ID and should drink plenty of fluids before donating.

Cecil’s Market was a local’s favorite, offering everything, including groceries, a delicatessen, novelties, liquor, some clothing, and it featured a huge magazine selection.

Cecil’s survived the arrival of the big Raley’s store located directly behind it in 1963 for another 50 years. It survived big winters (1952) and little winters (2014). But finally is time to call it quits. Sept. 21 was the final day for this South Lake Tahoe landmark.

Cecil Caple founded it in 1940. Then John Jovicich owned Cecil’s for 30 years before it was demolished when the state line area was redeveloped. It emerged as Cecil’s Fountain Plaza. Besides the market, the building now houses other businesses.

Vail Resorts has taken over property, but it is not known what will be going in there.

South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are requesting donations of books and audio/visual materials for the November book sale.

Materials should be good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2004. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish.

All donations are tax deductible, with receipts available from the front desk. All proceeds from the book sale go to Friends of the Library to help support various library programs and events for children and adults.

The South Lake Tahoe Branch Library is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10am to 8pm, and Thursday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm.

The final environmental document for the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee electrical line upgrade project proposed by California Pacific Electric Company, now known as Liberty Utilities, has been released.

The project would consist primarily of an upgrade of Liberty Utilities’ existing 625 and 650 power lines and associated substations from 60 kilovolts to 120 kilovolts to allow the entire North Lake Tahoe transmission system to operate at 120 kilovolts. The project is proposed to be constructed in a phased approach with the first installation being a rebuild of the 650 line.
