The 13th annual Treat Street will be Oct. 31 at Lake Tahoe Airport.
All trick or treaters are invited to this free evening of fun and games from 5-8 pm.
The purpose of this event is to provide a safe environment for youth on Halloween. There will be a haunted house, a bounce house, live radio remote and other special events.
• Two South Tahoe High students were winners in last spring’s national Nikon professional photography contest. Judges selected three of Aidan D’Angelo photos to be published and one of Brianna Rettig’s.
• Wells Fargo Bank donated $10,000 to the Food Bank of El Dorado County.
• Lake Tahoe Hard Rock has hired Dede Aspero as vice president of human resources; Siobhan Fajayan, director of marketing; and Mark Conrad, director of facilities. All three attended Whittell High School.
• The annual Veterans Concert is Nov. 12 at 7pm in the multipurpose room at South Tahoe Middle School.
• The 31th annual Rock & Gem Show is Oct. 18-19 at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville.

Virginia City was barely 90 years old when I snapped these black and white photos in 1951.
Today, more 60 years later, many of those landmarks remain. The classic Bucket of Blood saloon has moved its wall sign up to the second story, and the horse-drawn “Dead Wagon” glass-windowed local hearse is no longer parked just to the right of the picket fence.

According to Wikipedia, at the peak of its silver mining activity in the 1860s, Virginia City had an estimated 25,000 residents. One hundred fifty years later, the 2010 Census reported 855 residents.

• Bill Rock, the current chief operating officer of Northstar, will be the chief operating officer of Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort. Beth Howard, vice president of mountain dining and clubs, will be promoted to general manager of Northstar. Both changes are effective Nov. 1.

• Truckee River Winery is celebrating being 25 and this being the fifth anniversary of the tasting room on Oct. 12 from 4-8pm at the winery.
• Steamers in South Lake Tahoe will host a fundraiser Oct. 15 from 6-10pm for 3-year-old Mackenzie Bogart who has been diagnosed with leukemia.
• South Lake Tahoe Mayor Hal Cole on Oct. 10 read a proclamation declaring the first Tuesday of each October Public Employee Appreciation Day. Then the council voted to grant all employees eight hours off from work to be used in the coming year in appreciation for their service.
Kingsbury General Improvement District’s board is having a public hearing Oct. 21 regarding the sale of bonds.
The board at its September meeting approved the intent to issue the bonds. The bonds are not to exceed $6 million. The money will be spent on improving the water system.
The 6pm meeting will be at 169 Highway 50, Stateline.
The University of California is co-hosting a workshop for El Dorado and Amador county residents titled Recovering from Wildfire: Resources for Private Landowners.
The workshop will be at the Pleasant Valley Grange on Oct. 24 from 9am-4pm.
The workshop objectives are to increase understanding of the role of wildfire in forest development and change, post-fire issues and treatment options, and to provide information on post-fire treatment cost-share programs, tax issues and professional assistance for post-fire treatments for private landowners.
This workshop is focused on the needs of private forest landowners affected by the Sand and King fires, but also for residents interested in the future of forests after wildfire, staff and decision-makers with state, local, federal and tribal agencies concerned with forest management, defensible space, and water quality.

South Lake Tahoe is looking for applicants for the Airport Land Use Commission, Building/ADA Board of Appeals, Parks & Recreation Commission, and Planning Commission.
Appointments are for two years.
Applications may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office located at 1901 Airport Road, South Lake Tahoe between 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Applications can also be downloaded from the city’s website.
Completed applications must be returned to the City Clerk’s Office no later than 5pm Dec. 19.

El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies are getting lots of reports from victims of phone scams.
The caller tells the victim there is a warrant for their arrest unless they take care of it by making a payment. In some cases the male caller states he is a lieutenant with the sheriff’s office,and tells the victim that they failed to appear for a jury summons. He tells them that there is now a warrant for their arrest, and they need to put some money on a green dot card which can be purchased at Rite Aid or 7-Eleven. The caller has the name, address and phone number of the victim.
In other cases, the male caller states he is with the IRS, and tells the victim they owe a large amount of money to the IRS for tax fraud. He tells the victim that the IRS will place a lien against their property, and they will attach their wages unless they send a payment by Western Union money order.
Neither the sheriff’s office nor the IRS will contact people demanding a financial payment.
If someone receives a suspicious phone call demanding money, they should contact the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at 530.573.3000.
• There will be a series of six caregiving classes starting Oct. 20 in South Lake Tahoe sponsored by Barton Health.
• Aaron Atkins is Northstar’s ski and snowboard teams’ director.
• East West Partners is seeking approval from Placer County and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency for a development on a ridgeline above Kings Beach. North Tahoe Preservation Alliance, Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore will answer questions about the project Oct. 16 at 6pm at Kings Beach Event Center, 8318 N. Lake Tahoe Blvd.
• The USA Cycling Amateur and Para-Cycling Road National Championships will be in North Lake Tahoe June 24-28.
• Lake Tahoe Hard Rock donated blankets, sheets, towels, lamps, irons, alarm clocks, shampoos and non-perishable food to local charities including Christmas Cheer, Live Violence Free and South Shore Christian Assembly.
The inaugural Meyers Gear Swap is Oct. 19 from 11am-3pm in the parking lot at Tahoe Paradise parking lot.
Bring quality summer or winter gear to sell. Skis, snowboards, bikes, paddle gear, climbing gear, camping equipment, and other outdoor toys. All item should be no more than 5 years old.
Drop off sale items at the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course between 8:30-10:30am. Unsold gear must be picked up between 3-5pm. Unclaimed items will be considered donated.
There will be a $1 charge per item plus 20 percent commission that will go to the Meyers Community Foundation. The Meyers Community Foundation is a newly established 501(c)3 that advocates for and promotes and serves the needs of the Meyers residential and business communities.
