Longtime local Kathie McWilliams was suddenly diagnosed with lymphoma. She had to quit both her jobs to receive immediate treatment in Truckee.

There will be a fundraiser for her Nov. 13 from 4-9pm at the Flight Deck restaurant at Lake Tahoe Airport. Tickets are $20 in advance and may be purchased at Blue Angel, Sunsational Tans, Nepheles, Flight Deck and Meyers Downtown Cafe. Admission at the door will be $25.

Admission includes food provided by Nepheles, Blue Angel and Fasta Pasta and Cakes by Grace, and any entry for a prize. Entertainment will be by Jesse Kalen, Brian Murray, Ken Clark, Super Dave and Frank Benvenuto. There will be silent auction and raffles prizes from more than 50 local businesses.

• TRYP’s November workshop on productivity management is designed to help people create calm amongst chaos. Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are accepting applications for the Violet Richardson Award.

Each year the two South Shore Soroptimist clubs honor young women in the community ages 14-17 who are engaged in volunteer deeds such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; or working to end discrimination or poverty.

Each recipient will receive $100. Interested applicants may go online to SITS or SISLT for information and application. Applications are due by Dec. 1.

The informational meetings offered by Senior Care Plus cover frequently asked questions and common misconceptions regarding the Affordable Care Act and Medicare, including changes to coverage, premiums, government agencies, benefits and more. Plus, for seniors looking to control out-of-pocket spending, information on Medicare Advantage Plans such as Senior Care Plus is available.

Senior Care Plus benefits are open to Medicare eligible seniors in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, and Washoe counties.

• Sugar Bowl’s Torchlight Parade with Santa and the Backcountry Ball is Dec. 13 from 5-10pm in the Judah Lodge. It’s a fundraiser for the Sierra Avalanche Center and features professional big-mountain snowboarder Jeremy Jones. Tickets are $20 at the door.

• Northstar will host a Northern Lights Festival and Mardi Gras Celebration, as well as its annual Carve Tahoe ice-sculpting contest from Jan. 28-Feb. 2.

• Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project construction activities have essentially come to a halt for the season, except for a few final wrap-up tasks that are still in the works.

• Live Violence Free distributes food every Thursday from 9-10:30am at 2941 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. Give-aways also include adult and children’s clothing, toys, household and miscellaneous items.

Employees of the town of Truckee, including police officers, will begin to look a bit scruffy over the next several weeks. They are participating in the national cancer awareness campaign known as No-Shave November.

The Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center has estimated it would treat 350 new patients from this area. The center has several programs for patients that are funded by the American Cancer Society which include wigs, transportation support, and travel expenses.

The goal of No-Shave November is for people to donate the money they would using on hair grooming to a cancer charity.

Employees of the Town of Truckee, have partnered with No-Shave November, a web based organization who is partnered with the American Cancer Society, who are devoted to raising cancer awareness and supportive funds by putting a fun twist on the month of November. And what better way to grow awareness than with some hair?

Dream Spirit Baroque Band will be playing festive music featuring traditional Christmas tunes, and popular classics on Dec. 13 at 11am at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

Refreshments will be provided by Friends of the Library.

The event is free, however  non-perishable food items are being collected for Christmas Cheer.

The library is at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.

Tahoe National Bank existed from 1963 to 1979 before being absorbed by Central Bank. One branch was built next to the Tahoe Valley Post Office with a drive-up teller window.

Between that site and the adjacent junction of Pioneer Trail there had been the Swiss Village Motel with a phone booth, a gas station, El Dorado Savings, and the last Stateline, Calif., post office. They were gone with redevelopment.

El Dorado County planning commissioners on Dec. 11 will discuss the possibility of adding a cell phone tower to the South Shore.

New Cingular Wireless/AT&T is the applicant for the special use permit.

The company wants to put a tower on the south side of Skyline Drive about one mile northeast of the intersection of Highway 50 and Pioneer Trail. The proposal is for a 113-foot monopine tower with nine panel antennas, equipment shelter, related ground equipment, HVAC units, sound barrier walls, and solid wood fence.

The meeting starts at 8:30am in Placerville.

• The American Legion in South Lake Tahoe will have a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11am in the parking lot of the Legion. Tribute to our Veterans is the Placerville event for veterans. It is Nov. 11 at 11am at the El Dorado County Veterans Monument.
