At the beginning of November, Dick’s Sporting Goods chose South Lake Tahoe as the location for a commercial featuring kayaks and paddleboards.

Once filming was completed, the top of the line equipment worth $8,500 was donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

“We are so grateful to Dick’s Sporting Goods for their kind and generous donation. Many of our members have not had the opportunity to go kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake and having this equipment will enable us to ensure that every member gets out and experiences big blue in the best possible way,” Jude Wood, executive director, said in a press release.

• The Sierra Solstice Celebration at Sierra-at-Tahoe includes Christmas tree lighting on the Plaza Deck on Dec. 20 at 4pm. Santa will visit the plaza from 1:30-4:30pm Dec. 21. On Christmas Day he will be shredding the slopes.

• The 13th annual Tahoe Adventure Film Festival is Dec. 13 at MontBleu in Stateline.

• Heavenly Holidays is Dec. 20-31. The event features carolling, live music, magicians, jugglers, professional ice skaters, ice sculpting, photos with Santa and Heavenly mascot Ripperoo, and a parade at the Heavenly Village. A brightly lighted gondola will descend over the crowd New Year’s Eve, with fireworks at 9pm.

• The Nevada Highway Patrol has received a $15,758 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to provide collision reconstruction training for 10 NHP troopers from Dec. 8-19.

• Tahoe Best Friends in South Lake Tahoe has added a grooming spa for dogs.

Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce in partnership with South Lake Tahoe and Mann, Urrutia, Nelson CPAs is offering the Business of Budgeting & Bookkeeping workshop for business owners on Dec. 2 from 11am-1pm.

Workshop topics include the role bookkeeping plays in running a business, the basic accounting equation, the duality of accounting, the chart of account, types of accounts and financial statements, budgeting for start-up costs, capital investment needs and future operations, pricing strategies, seasonality scenarios, sales projections and what-if scenarios using projected income statements, statements of cash flows and balance sheets.

The workshop will also include potential legal concerns and what legal structure is appropriate for a business.

The third annual Light up South Lake Tahoe is Dec. 6.

The procession starts at 6pm at Stateline and concludes at the Shops at the Y with a tree lighting, hot cocoa, cookies and pictures with Santa.

Business owners located on Highway 50 are encouraged to decorate their storefronts with holiday lights and turn them on as the procession of the decorated fire truck, police vehicles and snowplow drive past on Highway 50.

Anyone may decorate their vehicle and follow behind the procession.

Headliners of this year’s SnowGlobe Music Festival include Skrillex, Zedd, Flume, Disclosure (DJ SET), and Porter Robinson.

The event returns Dec. 29-31 to the ball field next to Lake Tahoe Community College for the fourth year.

Also on the bill are Atmosphere, Phantogram, Flux Pavilion, Odesza, Emancipator Ensemble, Bro Safari, Justin Martin, Cherub, Thomas Jack, The Floozies, Branchez, Djemba Djemba and others. More musicians/disc jockeys will be added in the next month.

Benjamin Hatchett from UNR’s Nevada State Climate Office will be speaking Dec. 4 at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on the campus of Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village.

Past climates in the region characterized by ice ages or droughts leave clues that are etched into the mountain slopes. These records remain today for people to uncover in the field, laboratory, and through computer modeling efforts.

Hatchett will share ongoing weather and climate research in the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin and how it shapes scientists’ understanding of the greater Earth system.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is launching its first Giving Tuesday campaign this year.

The agency is hoping to catch the attention and hearts of local animal lovers by putting Pickle in the spotlight.

Weighing less than 5 pounds, Pickle was found abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Very fragile, suffering from an upper respiratory disease and a severe case of mange, she was brought to HSTT.  Outfitted with state-of-the-art medical equipment in their in-house treatment room and new facility, along with the help of foster homes for special cases, Pickle was nursed back to health.

The Giving Tuesday campaign has secured a matching donor up to $10,000, boosting the fundraising possibilities to $20,000. Every dollar brought in on Dec. 2 will be matched by an anonymous donor.

The focus is talking about unmet transit needs in the basin.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is hosting an open house Nov. 24 at the Forest Supervisor’s office in South Lake Tahoe to seek public input on improvements at Meeks Bay Resort.

The Washoe Tribe operates the West Shore resort under a special use permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The resort provides day-use beach access, marina operations, cabins, and RV and tent camping.

The tribe will present preliminary concepts that look at ways to address pedestrian and vehicular circulation improvements, water quality best management practices, reorganization of overnight accommodations, and streamlining of overall facilities operations.

The  open house is from  5-7pm.

The Forest Supervisor’s Office is located at 35 College Drive in South Lake Tahoe.
