The California Highway Patrol office in Meyers is starting a senior volunteer program.

Participants will:

• Deploy the radar trailer

• Work with local schools

• Direct traffic at special events

• Assist the front desk officer in serving the public

• Answer telephones

• Help with office duties

• Teach driver safety to seniors in the community

• Participate in ride-alongs with CHP officers.

Requirements:

• Be 55 or older

• Undergo a background investigation

• No felony convictions •

Be of good moral character

• Be available to volunteer during office hours

• Be willing to perform various duties as assigned

• Be able to work with minimal supervision.

Until April 2004, the beige cabin and adjacent two-story green building facing the stoplights on Highway 50 at Takela Avenue in South Lake Tahoe had housed various businesses. Between them and the beach behind it were a few aging cabins and residences.

• The Joint Commission has identified Barton Memorial Hospital as a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.

• The Veterans Affairs Commission awarded the Food Bank of El Dorado County $9,000 through its El Dorado Veterans Fund at El Dorado Community Foundation to support its No Vet Goes Hungry Program.

• Candy Cane Lane, the Carson Valley Inn’s custom outdoor drive-through Christmas light display, will be lighted for nightly viewing starting Nov. 30.

• Squaw Valley is donating $20 from every lift ticket sold opening day — Nov. 26 — to the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping local athletes and coaches pursue their dreams in the field of skiing and snowboarding.

• “Ski Town Après Ski” is the latest cookbook from Vail resident Jennie Iverson. It has Tahoe recipes in it.

Christmas Cheer reports 1,200 families have signed up to receive food items and 800 kids are in need of toys for Christmas.

Monetary donations, non-perishable food items and toys may be delivered to Christmas Cheer at 1120 Third St., South Lake Tahoe, or mail donations to P.O. Box 14489, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.

Volunteers are needed to distribute the items Dec. 18-19 from 10am-4pm.

The South Lake Tahoe Cancer League’s annual See’s Candy fundraiser is under way.

Money raised goes to provide stipends for cancer patients in the community. Funds are also used to reimburse people who drive patients to appointments.

Jonnie Crawford, a volunteer with the organization, said in an average month it’s not unusual to hand out more than $5,000 in grants and more than half that much in gas money.

The sale goes from Nov. 21-Dec. 24 from 10am-5pm in the storefront by Starbucks at the Y.

Holiday shoppers who attend the second annual Hospitality Holidays event on Dec. 3 from 5:30-9:30pm could complete their holiday shopping in one night and give the gift of locally made products from more than 50 artisans and vendors.

The event is sponsored by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association.

There will be free photos with Santa, face painting and sleigh rides.

Local band Sneaky Creatures will play and there will be performances by Tahoe Flow Arts. Complimentary food tastings and $5 drinks will be available. Raffle tickets may be purchased.

Shoppers will be entered to win the Show Your Love – Shop Local contest by collecting eight stamps from vendors. To get a stamp, pick up a contest card at the door upon arrival. Each vendor will stamp the card after completing a purchase of at least $25. The winner will receive two lift tickets at 10 local ski areas.

• The sign above had been at this Stateline property since 1965 when it first opened as Del Webb’s Sahara Tahoe. It came down Nov. 20 as the Lake Tahoe Hard Rock takes shape.

•On Nov. 25 from 6-7pm there will be a live interactive Twitter chat (#GoProChat) with three GoPro athletes from the South Shore – Jamie Anderson, Hannah Teter and Elena Hight.

• Reid Kaiser has been appointed assistant director of operations for Nevada Department of Transportation and Sondra Rosenberg will serve as assistant director of planning.

• Forty percent of its staff commuting from Reno is one reason Truckee-based Clear Capital is moving part of its operation to Reno in March.

• U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell sent this directive Nov. 4 to staff regarding commercial filming and photography permits. The public has until Dec. 3 to comment on the directive.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has launched Warrant Wednesday, a weekly feature on its Facebook page that enlists the public’s help with locating people who have outstanding arrest warrants.

Every Wednesday images of wanted persons will be added to the WCSO Facebook page along with arrest or bench warrant information, and a contact number.

The sheriff’s office reminds residents not to take any action themselves. If people have information about the whereabouts of a wanted individual, contact the sheriff’s 0ffice or law enforcement in their jurisdiction.

Lightning struck the tree in Meyers that is decorated each holiday season. And when this happened it shorted out most of the strands of lights.

Meyers Community Foundation is scrambling to raise cash for the new lights.

The 4th annual Holiday Tree Lighting is Dec. 5 at 5pm.

$25 — Bronze
$50 — Silver
$100 – Gold
$250 — Platinum.

The third annual Holiday Parade will be Dec. 13 beginning at 3pm in South Lake Tahoe.

The parade will start at the corner of Ski Run Boulevard and Pioneer Trail and proceed down the run to Highway 50 where it will turn west toward the Y. The parade will end in the back of the parking lot at T.J. Maxx.

Cookies provided by Raley’s and Grocery Outlet, and hot cocoa provided by Lake Tahoe Pizza will be served.

Santa will be on hand for the children.

Christmas Cheer will be on site to collect new toys, cash donations, and non-perishable food items. There will also be a donation box in the foyer at T.J. Maxx from Nov. 25-Dec. 1 for those who cannot attend but wish to donate.
