• Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District boards are having a joint meeting March 24 at 5:30pm at the college.

• Debbie Endsley, 56, of Placerville has been appointed acting secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs.

• The film “Fed Up” is being shown for free Jan. 22 at 6pm in the Truckee High School auditorium. A nutritious meal will be available for $5. Following the film, a panel of community experts will answer questions.

In the photo above, Harrah’s historic triangular marquee is seen bottom center at the entrance to Harrah’s California parking lot which extended to Paul Kennedy’s Tahoe Steakery — the low, flat single-story rectangular building on Highway 50. That parking lot became the site of the Embassy Suites, known today as Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel.

From the Steakery up to Park Avenue along the mountain side of Highway 50 were motels, hotels, gas station, restaurants, bars, miniature golf, groceries, retail, et cetera, all of which were razed in the 1990s during Re-development.

Today’s views from Harrah’s to Park Avenue includes the high-end hotel, condominiums, restaurants, movies, professional space, retail and the Heavenly gondola.

On the lake side of Highway 50, a bankrupt project in the first decade of the 2000s devoured multiple motels and retail businesses, leaving an empty 11-plus acre triangular area adjacent to Stateline Avenue which locals sardonically labelled the Ta-hole. After several years of dormancy, the site now has some Highway 50 commercial frontage built by investors in 2014.

The annual Father Daughter Dance is Feb. 6 at Harrah’s Convention Center in Stateline from 7-9:30pm.

This is an evening for fathers and their daughters to dance and visit with friends.

Refreshments will be served and a photo keepsake is available for an additional fee. Tickets are $10 a person. The event often sells out.

• High Fives Foundation gave Truckee resident Jeff Andrews a grant for $10,830. Andrews was snowboarding at Sugar Bowl in March 2014 when he overshot a jump in the terrain park. The crash burst fractured his C-5 vertebrae into his spinal cord at the C-5/C-7 level causing paralysis from the chest down.

• Andrea Drew of Drew Consulting will be teaching people how to be a visionary at work. The Jan. 21, 5:30-6:30pm workshop is put on by Tahoe Regional Young Professionals. It’s free to members, $5 for others. It will be in the boardroom of Nichols Consulting, 155 Highway 50, No. 204, Stateline.

• USA Today named Carson City the best state capital to visit.

• Eighth-grader Brandon Koyama of Carson Valley Middle School in Gardnerville placed in the top 10 in the National Radon Poster Contest after his entry took first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest.

Placer County is looking for people to participate in the next Sheriff Office’s Community Awareness Academy.

There are eight classes, each covering a different topic.

Classes are Monday-Wednesday 6-8:30pm beginning March 2 and ending March 25. Classes are in the Community Room at the Placer County Sheriff’s Office headquarters in the Auburn Justice Center, 2929 Richardson Drive, Auburn.

The academy is intended to provide the citizens of Placer County with an overview of the sheriff office’s functions, policies and procedures, as well as getting them involved in their community. The goal of the academy is to provide a greater awareness and understanding of law enforcement’s role in the community.

Attendees must be at least 18, work or reside in Placer County and agree to submit to a minor background check.

The Douglas County Public Library’s free storytime will resume at the Kahle Community Center starting Jan. 9 and continuing through March 26.

Preschool stories take place on alternate Thursday and Friday mornings from 9-9:30am. Thursday dates are: Jan. 15, Jan. 29, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, March 12 and March 26. Friday dates are: Jan. 9, Jan. 23, Feb. 6, March 6 and March 20.

Younger children are welcome; they must be accompanied by an adult.

The seventh annual Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser to benefit Austin’s House is Feb. 27 at the Carson Valley Inn from 6-10pm.

The party atmosphere will be of Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday. This casual and crazy fundraiser features food, music, dancing, games, raffle prizes, and a silent auction.

The party starts at 6pm with a cocktail hour. Then there will be a western barbecue buffet. After dinner, the Cowboy Mardi Gras party hits full stride with music, dancing and fun games.

With the contract for Live at Lakeview summer concerts having expired, South Lake Tahoe is looking for someone to produce a weekly event at Lakeview Commons.

“OnCourse Events contract expired at the end of last summer to produce Live at Lakeview. Being a government agency, we cannot provide preferential treatment to any one business and must release it as a request for proposal,” Tracy Franklin, spokeswoman for the city, told Lake Tahoe News.

• Raley’s customers, employees and community partners’ annual holiday bag campaign surpassed its goal by nearly 50 percent, raising 2.9 million pounds of food in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
