Highway 50 in the Tahoe Valley area in the early 1960s had overhead wires and billboards, like the distant Bank of America billboard seen halfway up the right margin.
There was a second billboard to the right of that one, out of view here. The gap between the bridge and those billboards was a large vacant lot which now is the site of Motel 6 and restaurant.
Across the street, built on landfill, was the ever-popular Outdoorsman, now the Grocery Outlet. The bridge was replaced and the roadway widened in the 1990s.

Douglas County Parks & Recreation will be offering a dog obedience class at Kahle Community Center in Stateline from March 5-April 9 from 7-8pm.
Cost of $80.
Instructor Guy Yeaman uses a light-handed approach to help dogs obey commands. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and shot records need to be brought to the first class. Each dog needs a choke chain and fabric or leather lead. F

• The final environmental impact report and statement are available online for Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Epic Discovery Project and proposed amendments to the 2007 Heavenly Master Plan. Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s Advisory Planning Commission is scheduled to review the final EIR/EIS document and make a recommendation on certification March 11. The TRPA Governing Board is scheduled to review the document for consideration and possible certification at its regular meeting March 25-26.

• The Friends of Alpine Meadows (FoAM) will host its first public meeting Feb 21 at 5 pm at the Tahoe Mill Collective, 150 Alpine Meadows Road. FoAM will be presenting the results of the Alpine Meadows user survey, which had more than 500 responses, as well as discuss the goals of the organization.
• A workshop Feb. 17 by the South Lake City Council regarding vacation rentals could affect those who use Airbnb. The meeting starts at 9am at Lake Tahoe Airport.

A Brush with Kindness program is available for qualified low income homeowners in South Lake Tahoe.
Volunteers work to improve the condition of homes by painting, landscaping and providing minor exterior repairs at a minimum charge or no cost to homeowners who would be unable to complete the work on their own.

The meeting is at Lake Tahoe Airport. Comments on the negative mitigation declaration are being taken until March 10 at 4pm.

Between now and Feb. 23, Nevada’s Joining Forces law enforcement team will be cracking down on distracted drivers throughout the state.
Nevada’s ban on handheld devices while driving went into effect three years ago and still law enforcement continues to spot and cite offenders every day. The law was enacted because of the more than 3,500 distraction-related crashes every year in the state.
Surfing the Internet, using a GPS or changing the song on your mp3 player are all illegal distractions taking motorists’ eyes off the road and causing crashes.
Distracted driving facts:
· Research has found that using a cell phone behind the wheel makes a driver four times more likely to get into a crash serious enough to cause injury.
· When sending or receiving text messaging behind the wheel, a driver’s eyes are off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, equivalent to driving the length of a football field at 65 miles per hours.
· The likelihood of crashes dramatically rise when your actions require a combination of visual, manual and cognitive attention
The seventh annual Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser benefitting Austin’s House is Feb. 27 at the Carson Valley Inn from 6-10pm.
The party atmosphere will be like Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Fat Tuesday. Carson City Toyota Scion donated $4,000 to sponsor the fundraiser.
