Roland Schumann will be giving a talk called Entrepreneurship: Is it Right for You? on Feb. 25 at Sierra Nevada College.

The free lecture is from 11:30am-1pm in the TCES building, rooms 139/141.

Schumann will offer wisdom and practical advice about entrepreneurship and venture funding to students and community members. His venture capital-funded company, SwapDrive Inc., was a pioneer in the cloud storage industry and was acquired by Symantec Corporation in 2008. Prior to SwapDrive, he was a senior associate at Booz Allen Hamilton, where he provided technical risk management services; and was a senior project manager and information systems developer for the Advanced Technologies group within Thomson Corporation.

Schumann also serves on the SNC Tahoe board of trustees.

With the new building season coming up, there are things every contractor, designer and homeowner should know before they start any project.

South Lake Tahoe officials are putting on a free seminar to enlighten people.

Topics will include: 

· Radon requirements will be mandatory.

· Sprinklers for additions could be required.

· Take into account in updating all plumbing fixtures when you improve anything in your house.

· Smoke detectors older than 10 years will need to be replaced whenever you pull a permit.

· Recycling documentation for all construction waste is required on all projects.

· When are building permits required?

• South Tahoe Public Utility District’s board is having a workshop March 3 from 2-5pm to review the proposed 2015-16 budget and 10-year financial plan. The meeting is at the district office, 1275 Meadow Crest Drive, South Lake Tahoe.

• Over the Edge, a mountain bike company, is opening a shop in South Lake Tahoe this year. The company tends to locate where the sport is a destination attraction.

• Foreigner will be at MontBleu in Stateline on June 6 at 9pm. Tickets are $55.50, $65.50 and $75.50, plus fees, and available through Ticketmaster.

• Duane Whitelaw, former North Tahoe Fire Protection District chief, is now general manager/CEO of North Tahoe Public Utility District.

• This is the third time in four years the lack of snow has forced the cancellation of the Great Ski Race. This had been the primary fundraiser for the Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue Team.

• There will be a reception for plein air painter Ginny Schankerman on March 6 from 6:30-8:30pm at Bona Fide HQ, 1069 Magua St., No. 4, Meyers.

• Lake Tahoe Community College’s accreditation was reaffirmed at the highest level by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

• The California controller’s website has been updated to include salaries of special district workers in 2013.

• Camp Richardson’s Snowshoe Cocktail Race returns Feb. 21 at 7pm. Snowshoes many not be required; so it will be a sand race. Racers with cocktail trays in hand, navigate through obstacles and up and down the beach. The winner is the fastest and driest at the finish. Signups begin at 5pm at the Beacon restaurant.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County is bringing the mobile food pantry to South Lake Tahoe on Feb. 25.

Emergency food supplies will be handed out from 10-11am in the American Legion parking lot,  2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry will be the guest speaker at this month’s Incorporate Olympic Valley’s community meeting.

Kerry will discuss the keys to operating a successful and vibrant town. South Lake Tahoe was incorporated from six unincorporated areas in 1965 and is the most populated town in El Dorado County.

Incorporate Olympic Valley is working to become California’s next town and is awaiting the draft Comprehensive Fiscal Analysis, expected to be released in March. After that is completed, revenue neutrality negotiations with Placer County will begin.

The meeting is March 4 at 7pm at the Squaw Valley Public Service District offices, 305 Squaw Valley Road, beginning at 7 pm.

Lake Tahoe’s railroad history will come to life Feb. 19 with a presentation by Jerry Blackwill.

Blackwill is vice president of Strategic Planning for the Truckee Donner Railroad Society and board president of the Sierra State Parks Foundation

He will be telling the story of how Duane L. Bliss, William Seth Bliss, Walter D. Bliss, Duane L Bliss Jr, and Frank Titus built and ran this tourist system, laying the foundation for Lake Tahoe’s present day tourist industry.

The talk is at 7pm at the Truckee Veterans’ Memorial Building,10214 High St., Truckee. Cost is $10.

• Placer County is cracking down on people trespassing on the Foresthill Bridge. Ten people, mostly from the Sacramento area, were cited early Sunday and 24 more were encountered there later Sunday.

• Sunnyside in Tahoe City is hosting a fundraiser for Tahoe XC Junior Nordic Competition and Development Team on Feb. 18 from 4-8pm.
