Jesse Patterson of the League to Save Lake Tahoe will highlight successes and lessons learned from Pipe Keepers, a program that engages citizens to monitor stormwater runoff dumping out of pipes directly into Lake Tahoe and Eyes on the Lake where citizens monitor the Lake for aquatic invasive species and report their findings.

The presentation on March 18 form non-1:30pm at Lake Tahoe Community College will also highlight ways that these programs can serve as a model for other citizen monitoring efforts.

People will be taught how volunteer monitoring programs are integral to protecting Lake Tahoe and influencing policy and public opinion.

• El Dorado County is having a grand opening celebration for its animal shelter in Diamond Springs on March 29 from 2-4pm.

• The California Tahoe Conservancy and California Department of Parks and Recreation will host a workshop April 1 from 6:30-8pm at the North Tahoe Event Center to gather input on the feasibility and design for a reconstructed public pier in Kings Beach.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in its capacity as the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization, is asking people to take an online survey to provide public input needed to create a connected, accessible, and safe bicycle and pedestrian network at Lake Tahoe.

It takes about 15 minutes and will be available through June 30.

The survey seeks to identify parts of the bicycle and pedestrian network that are working well, areas that are in need of improvement, and the types of infrastructure people want to see built in the Lake Tahoe region. Full-time residents, seasonal residents, commuters, and visitors are all encouraged to participate.

Survey data will help with the creation of Linking Tahoe: Active Transportation Plan – Bicycles, Pedestrians & Safe Routes to Schools.

Community meetings also are being organized to gather public input for the Active Transportation Plan. A meeting at the South Lake Tahoe Public Library is scheduled for April 14 from 5:30 to 7:30pm. A North Shore meeting at Kings Beach Elementary is scheduled for April 16 from 5:30 to 7:30p.

This month’s South Lake Tahoe AAUW speaker will be talking about volunteer service trips to Central America.

South Tahoe locals Liz and Bill Gieg will discuss their 25 years of experience leading medical mission trips to Central America, and AAUW member Lisa Dernbach will share highlights from her volunteer experience installing water wells in Guatemala.

The free event — which is open to everyone — is March 14 at 10am in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

•  A parked South Lake Tahoe police vehicle belonging to a community services officer was hit last week near the 7-Eleven on Highway 50. The vehicle is in the shop getting repaired; the driver of the other vehicle was cited.

In 1965, the newly-formed city of South Lake Tahoe had its first city council meeting in the Tahoe Savings and Loan building, located on Highway 50 at Takela.

The savings and loan scandal in the 1990s forced the closure of the Tahoe branch.

Tahoe Savings and Loan ceased operations in 1990. Its time-and-temperature sign on the corner it now gone.

The building has not change much and looks dated.

Today, the El Dorado County offices are in the building.

• There will be an update on the Lake Tahoe Airport master plan on March 16 from 5:30-7pm at the airport. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the preferred alternatives of the future use of the airport facility.

• The former Romantic Adventures site in South Lake Tahoe is going to be a general merchandise store selling hookah pipes.

• Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce’s Business Expo is March 27 from 4:30-8:30pm at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Tickets are $10 in advance and may be purchased online or $15 that day. Children 5 and younger are free.

• There will be a community job fair on the South Shore on March 31 and on the North Shore April 1. Both are from 3-7pm. The first one is at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, the other at Olympic Village Inn.

It’s almost time to spring forward an hour.

Daylight saving time begins March 8 at 2am.

This means to start with it will be a little lighter at night and darker in the morning. It also means losing an hour of sleep on the first day.
