The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is seeking public review and feedback on its applications for California off-highway vehicle cooperative funds for the 2017-18 grant cycle.

The forest has submitted three preliminary applications to the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division in Sacramento that would support the Carson and Bridgeport ranger districts. The first grant includes a strong emphasis on law enforcement and will fund law enforcement officers and forest protection officers. A ground operations grant will focus on operating and maintaining OHV and snowmobile areas across the two districts. The final grant application will focus on avalanche safety and education on the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area.

The grant applications will be posted on the OHMVR website after March 6. Instructions for submitting comments are posted on the website.

The 30-day public review and comment period ends April 2. 

The next Barton wellness lecture is titled Making Sense of Current Nutrition Trends.

Greg Bergner, Barton Health medical director of lifestyle and wellness, will talk about how eating patterns effect longevity and how healthy eating can reverse disease. He will share what foods are best for a healthy life.

The free talk is March 8, 6-7pm in the board room at Lake Tahoe Community College.

·       Ridge Tahoe’s 35th anniversary spring carnival will be March 25. It will include dance, hula hoop, ’80s ski theme costume and snowman making contests; dodge ball and corn hole tournaments, snowshoe relay races and pool party from noon-4pm. Attendees may fuel up with barbecue and s’mores, and partake or spectate in Frisbee, volleyball, badminton and bocce ball. Admission is free even for non-resort guests; corn hole tournament is $10/team and dodge ball is $35/team.

·       The International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association’s Tahoe Freeride World Tour Qualifier is March 28-31 at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

·       The 14th annual Gunbarrel 25 will be March 31 at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

·       Google expert trainer Corissa Saint Laurent will explain how customers find businesses online, how to promote your online presence with search engine optimization, and online advertising. The class is March 15, 8-10:30am at the Truckee airport. Tickets are available online.

·       The Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport Ranger District will re-open for snowmobiling on March 5.

·       The League to Save Lake Tahoe is having a volunteer training and appreciation on April 4 from 5:30-8:30pm at its South Lake Tahoe office.

·       The Meeks Bay bike trail construction contract was awarded to Minden-based Herback General Engineering in the amount of $3,663,312.68. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall. It’s an extension of the West Shore bike trail system south of Sugar Pine Point along Highway 89 to Meeks Bay, heading toward Emerald Bay.

·       Tom Stuart has been hired as South Lake Tahoe’s principal human resources analyst.

·       Barton Health is introducing two support groups. The Parkinson’s Disease Support Group offers support for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, as well as family members, and caretakers of those effected. ·       The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe’s 10th annual Black Tie & Tails event included 350 guests and more than 100 dogs attending the sold-out event. The Humane Society raised over $200,000.

·      Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is hosting a workshop for business owners and community members about tax preparation. This workshop will be facilitated by tax experts from H&R Block and M.U.N. CPAs. It will be March 21, noon-1:30pm at the chamber office in Stateline. Cost is $10 for members, $20 for others.

·      The Douglas County Public Library is participating in the In-N-Out Burger Cover to Cover Club reading program from March 3-April 14. Children ages 4-12 are eligible to earn a certificate for a free cheeseburger or hamburger for every five books read. Each child may earn up to three certificates. Sign up for the program at the Minden or Zephyr Cove library to receive a reading log. 

·      Rubicon Pizza Company in Northstar Village recently gave $15,000 to Truckee Bike Park project.

·      Emmy-nominated comedian/actor and “Saturday Night Live” alum Rob Schneider will be at MontBleu in Stateline on March 10.

·      Nevada’s law enforcement officers participating in the Joining Forces program will be working to keep the roads safe by watching for drivers exceeding the speed limit. This enforcement will take place from March 2-18.

There will be a talk on April 11 at 6pm about all the experiences available along the Tahoe Rim Trail.

The free event will be at the South Lake Tahoe Library on Rufus Allen Boulevard.

This event will feature a panel of TRTA guides and trail enthusiasts.

They will help people find that perfect weekend hike with the family or a bike ride with amazing views. Plus, they will answer questions.

·      The special El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting regarding VHRs set for March 3 has been canceled because of weather.

·      The Wilbur D. May Arboretum in Reno is unveiling an exhibition to call attention to the many threats facing trees. Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat highlights the precarious future of the world’s most endangered trees. It will run from March 2-June 10. No cost to visit.

·      Tahoe XC on March 4 is hosting the Alpenglow 20K in lieu of the Great Ski Race, followed by the 2018 Great Ski Race Party. Race is at 10am; signup that day in Tahoe City from 8-9:30am.

·      South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance are partnering for the third art gallery reception on March 5 at 6pm at City Hall. The Tahoe Arts Alliance has selected Nick Akins as the featured artist. His art will be on display from March 5-June 15.

·      Former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and former Secretary of State John Kerry will appear together as part of the inaugural Harry Reid Public Engagement Lecture Series event at 3pm April 3, at Lawlor Events Center on the UNR campus.

·      Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District boards have a joint meeting planned for April 24, 5:30pm at LTCC.

·      According to the California Health and Human Services Agency, Barton Memorial Hospital has one of the lowest 2017 C-section rates of birthing hospitals in the state.

·      Luke Bryan will be at Harveys on July 25 at 7pm. Opening will be Morgan Wallen.

·      California Tahoe Conservancy board has canceled its March 1 meeting because of the storm.

El Dorado County CAO Don Ashton is hosting a  round table discussion on March 21 in Meyers.

Topics will include:

• Where the county gets its money
• How much is mandated to be spent and where
• How much is discretionary and options about how to spend it
• The process driving the decisions about what gets funded and what doesn’t, and the consequences of those decisions.

It will be from 5:30-7pm at the CCC center in Meyers.

Tickets are available for the annual Lincoln-Reagan Dinner.

The event is co-hosted by the El Dorado County Republican Central Committee and the El Dorado County Unit of the California Republican Assembly.

Guest speakers include Rep. Tom McClintock, gubernatorial candidate Assemblyman Travis Allen; District 6 Assemblyman Kevin Kiley and El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

The dinner is March 29 at the American Legion Hall, 4561 Greenstone Road, Placerville. The evening kicks off at 5:30pm with a no host wine and beer bar, followed by dinner at 6:30pm. Tickets are $45 per person or $85 per couple.

All proceeds will go for the funding of a county Republican campaign headquarters.
